HiveBuzz - the story behind the badges

HiveBuzz: the story behind the badges (and my own board)

Today I opened my board on HiveBuzz and I thought it would be nice to show it to you. Then I got curious about the service itself: who built it, and how did it become the little game that follows us every time we post, comment or upvote? I did some research, and the story is worth telling.

First, my board. I split the screenshot in two parts and placed them side by side, so you can see everything at once.

My board in numbers

  • Level: the green Dolphin badge, with 48,094,132 on the ribbon. HiveBuzz ranks accounts by their VESTS and gives them the names of sea animals.
  • 53 posts and 456 comments. It seems I like to talk even more than to write!
  • 44 upvotes per post on average.
  • 278 HP of author rewards (5.245 HP on average per post) and 11 HP of curation rewards.
  • Activity badges earned: 50 Posts, 400 Comments, 1500 Upvotes, 250 Rewards, 300 Replies and 2500 Upvoted.
  • Still locked: the Daily Top and Weekly Top trophies (Upvoted, Commented and Payout), the Monthly Author badge (7/31) and the Yearly Author badge (18/365). The next Weekly Author is at 3/7.

What is HiveBuzz?

HiveBuzz is a gamification project for Hive. It follows what you do on the blockchain, shows your achievements as badges and tells you when you reach a goal, with a comment on your latest post or comment (reply "STOP" if you do not want them). There are activity badges, daily and weekly rankings, personal and meetup badges, Power Up badges and a ranking page. The Weekly and Monthly Author badges reward those who post every day of the period, and an account with no activity for 30 days becomes a "dead fish" and loses its level.

From SteemitBoard to HiveBuzz

  • 2016-2017: @arcange joined in July 2016 and in September 2016 started SteemSQL, a public database of the whole blockchain. Then came SteemitBoard, the first "game experience" for Steemit, with the graphic designer @captaink. By June 2017 it was already running, and Arcange had even added the "dead fish" idea.
  • March-April 2020: Hive was born, and SteemitBoard had stopped about a month earlier, when the delegation from Steemit Inc. that supported its daily operations ended. On April 28, 2020 Arcange announced HiveBuzz, with a new interface and the same spirit, and the old achievements were carried over to the Hive accounts. @captaink and @techybear took care of graphics and web design, and the announcement was translated into German, Spanish, French and Italian.
  • From 2021: the Hive Power Up Month (first edition in September 2021), together with the Power Up Day and Power Up Helper events, to encourage people to grow their Hive Power. According to HiveBuzz's own figures, Power Up Day alone has moved more than 11 million HP.
  • March 22, 2022: NFT for Peace was launched. These are NFT badges bought on HiveBuzz to help civilians in Ukraine, with reports on how the funds are used published by @zirochka. The team declared that none of the proceeds go to its staff.
  • 2022: HiveFest badges and a crystal trophy for those who attended five HiveFests, a World Cup contest with more than 7,000 HIVE in prizes, and more than 3,000 notification replies per month. The team behind it counted five people: three for design and web, two for the community.
  • 2023-2024: funding problems (the proposal was defunded for months and received only a third of the requested budget), a hack in early 2024 and a rebuild of the systems. In December 2024 the team asked to renew the proposal with 150 HBD per day.
  • 2025: @soleon joined as the new project manager, with a background in community management and marketing, while Arcange stays for technical and Hive expertise. The goals are new challenges, more visibility and funding.

Who is Arcange?

@arcange has been on Hive since July 2016 and is a witness with more than 20,000 followers. His profile describes him as the creator of HiveBuzz, HiveSQL, HiveAuth, Engage, Hive.NET, Hive Recovery, Hive Autoclaim and Xfer, and his location reads "Earth (for now™)". Every month he publishes the Hive Statistics and Hive Financial Statistics reports, and the renewals of the HBD Stabilizer proposal also appear on his blog. In 2021 he presented the Hive Authentication Service on the CryptoManiacs podcast, and in March 2025 he was the guest of HiveSpace.

One detail touched me: in December 2017 he wrote that keeping SteemSQL free cost him about $350 per month for the servers, and that he did not even count his own time. After 40 years in IT, I know very well what it means to build a tool that everybody uses. Thank you, Arcange, and thank you to everyone who works on HiveBuzz.

What I want to unlock next

I would like to complete the Weekly Author badge (I am at 3 of 7 days) and, little by little, the Monthly one (7 of 31). The Daily and Weekly Top trophies are harder, because they depend on all of you: a post or a comment that ends up among the most upvoted, the most commented or the best paid. So thank you for every vote and every comment you leave me!

Which HiveBuzz badge do you like the most, and which one are you still missing?

  • Badge Activity ottenuti: 50 Posts, 400 Comments, 1500 Upvotes, 250 Rewards, 300 Replies e 2500 Upvoted.

  • Dal 2021: l'Hive Power Up Month (prima edizione a settembre 2021), insieme agli eventi Power Up Day e Power Up Helper, per incoraggiare a far crescere il proprio Hive Power.

Cosa voglio sbloccare ora

I just love the gamification aspect. I always did. In the early days when engagement was tight as it often is for new community members, HiveBuzz might be the only reaction beneath your posts to show they had even gone out in to the world.

Some people do not like it, I do, I would never know about some of the milestones I had reached without HiveBuzz.

Sometimes when I open my board, I can get lost there for quite a while, it is a mine of information.

Happy Tuesday and an even better rest of the week 😎🌻
