Everything is rotten everywhere
After several years, and taking advantage of some free time to catch up on the films I had been meaning to see, I enjoyed one by the French filmmaker Xavier Giannoli. I've seen several of his films and liked them quite a bit, and this one didn't disappoint. He's a filmmaker who likes to delve deeply into his characters, their conflicts, and their inherent dualities.
On this occasion, the director wrote and directed this adaptation of Lost Illusions, a work by Honoré de Balzac, originally published in 1843. The original work already offered a panorama comparable to today's, and the director maintains that classic style while imbuing it with a modern cinematic language. It might bother some purists, but let's remember that it's an adaptation, and for me, it captures an important part of the novel, and the result is satisfying.
These days, many people talk about the ills of modern journalism: that news is a business, that malicious journalism, fake news, disinformation, etc., abound. Sometimes we're surprised, without realizing that these problems have always existed. After all, it's all a business. Of course, everyone wants to project that image of impartial journalism, reporting the truth, ethically and all, but in practice, we know that even the most respected in the profession can succumb to pressure, money, and so on. We're human, imperfect.
Perhaps since the invention of the printing press and the appearance of the first newspapers, the opportunity arose to manipulate, deceive, and, of course, make a lot of money for anyone who wanted a good story about their business, their music, their play, or whatever, as long as they convinced readers that something was really good. Today we see it on social media: influencers posting videos of themselves eating a burger from a place that paid them, so they can claim it's the best they've ever tasted and get their followers to flock to buy it. The same thing happens in film: serious and renowned critics praise terrible movies just to convince people to buy a ticket and go to the theater. It has always been this way.
That's why it's impossible to watch the film and not notice the parallels with our current world, especially with journalism, which is where the story centers. Like the novel, it revolves around the character of Lucien Chardon, who calls himself Lucien de Rubempré, using his mother's noble surname. A young man from Angoulême manages to move to Paris, where he hopes to succeed as a poet. Initially, he has the patronage of a high-society woman, but, being a peasant, he finds himself alone in that wild city, where he must survive.
Lost illusions, the dream of becoming a renowned writer. Lucien loves art; he possesses that innocence we've all had at some point, especially when we're young. We believe the world is fair and that we can excel in the art we think we've mastered. The harsh clash with reality, the impact of life and its cruel way of shattering our plans. I liked that part of the story: how a young man from a small town transforms into a journalist, selling his stories to the highest bidder, giving in to excess and vice, and relapsing into that hidden innocence because he believes he's reached the top and no one can dethrone him. How naive Lucien is!
The film is impeccable in its costumes and sets; visually, it will also captivate you, and its story is quite good, with a good pace. I have no complaints about the cast, composed mostly of French actors. I think it's an interesting adaptation, which ultimately turns out to be an enjoyable product. I still have to watch a French miniseries by this director and a film from this year called Les Rayons et les Ombres (Rays and Shadows). I also recommend checking out her filmography.

Tras varios años, y aprovechando algo de tiempo libre para ponerme al día con las películas que tenía pendientes, disfruté de una del cineasta francés Xavier Giannoli. He visto varias de sus películas y me han gustado bastante, y esta no me decepcionó. Es un cineasta al que le gusta profundizar en sus personajes, sus conflictos y sus dualidades inherentes.
En esta ocasión, el director escribió y dirigió esta adaptación de Las ilusiones perdidas, obra de Honoré de Balzac, publicada originalmente en 1843. La obra original ya ofrecía un panorama comparable al actual, y el director mantiene ese estilo clásico a la vez que lo impregna de un lenguaje cinematográfico moderno. Puede que moleste a algunos puristas, pero recordemos que es una adaptación, y para mí, captura una parte importante de la novela, y el resultado es satisfactorio.
Hoy en día, mucha gente habla de los males del periodismo moderno: que las noticias son un negocio, que abunda el periodismo malicioso, las noticias falsas, la desinformación, etc. A veces nos sorprendemos, sin darnos cuenta de que estos problemas existen desde siempre. Al fin y al cabo, todo es un negocio. Claro que uno quiere proyectar esa imagen de periodismo imparcial, que informa la verdad, con ética y demás, pero en la práctica, sabemos que incluso los más respetados en la profesión pueden sucumbir a la presión, al dinero, etc. Somos humanos, imperfectos.
Quizás desde la invención de la imprenta y la aparición de los primeros periódicos, surgió la oportunidad de manipular, engañar y, por supuesto, ganar mucho dinero para cualquiera que quisiera una buena historia sobre su negocio, su música, su obra de teatro, o lo que fuera, siempre y cuando convencieran a los lectores de que algo era muy bueno. Hoy lo vemos en las redes sociales: influencers que publican vídeos comiendo una hamburguesa de un sitio que les pagó, para poder decir que es la mejor que han probado y que su público acuda en masa a comprarla. Lo mismo ocurre en el cine: críticos serios y reconocidos alaban películas pésimas solo para convencer a la gente de que compre una entrada y vaya al cine. Siempre ha sido así.
Por eso es imposible ver la película y no notar los paralelismos con nuestro mundo actual, especialmente con el periodismo, que es donde se centra la historia. Al igual que la novela, gira en torno al personaje de Lucien Chardon, que se hace llamar Lucien de Rubempré, usando el apellido noble de su madre. Un joven de Angoulême consigue mudarse a París, donde quiere triunfar como poeta. Inicialmente, cuenta con el mecenazgo de una mujer de la alta sociedad, pero, siendo campesino, se queda solo en esa ciudad salvaje, donde debe sobrevivir.
Las ilusiones perdidas, la ilusión de ser un escritor de renombre. Lucien ama el arte; posee esa inocencia que todos hemos tenido alguna vez, sobre todo de jóvenes. Creemos que el mundo es justo y que podemos sobresalir en el arte que pensamos dominar. El duro choque con la realidad, el impacto de la vida y su cruel manera de destruir nuestros planes. Me gustó esa parte de la historia: cómo un joven de pueblo se transforma en periodista, vendiendo sus historias al mejor postor, entregándose a los excesos, al vicio, y recayendo en esa inocencia que yace oculta, porque cree haber llegado a la cima y que nadie puede destronarlo. ¡Qué ingenuo es Lucien!
La película es impecable en su vestuario y escenarios; visualmente, también nos cautivará, y su historia es bastante buena, con un buen ritmo. No tengo quejas sobre el reparto, compuesto en su mayoría por actores franceses. Creo que es una adaptación interesante, que al final resulta ser un producto que se disfrutará. Todavía tengo pendiente ver una miniserie francesa de esta directora y una película de este año titulada Les Rayons et les Ombres. También recomiendo que vean su filmografía.
