The stunning return of “Dragon Ball Super” brought many surprises last week. Many people were fascinated by the new animation and the omission of the unnecessary filler scenes from the original series. But the moment of truth—and the one many fans had been waiting for—to determine the quality of this new version was the first confrontation between Goku and the God of Destruction.
That is because episode 5 of DBS, which adapts this event in its entirety, was heavily criticized for its poor animation. In general, DBS’s fight sequences were very inferior compared to DBZ. However, it seems that in “Dragon Ball Super: Beerus,” things are going to be very different.
The Battle of Gods arc began in this second episode and, without wasting any time, covered Goku’s first encounter with Beerus on King Kai’s planet. As we have already seen twice in different versions, Goku challenges the God of Destruction to a fight to demonstrate the level of his power.
We now have three versions of this brief confrontation. The original movie’s version is more fleeting, as it serves as a demonstration of Beerus’s superiority: Goku transforms directly into Super Saiyan 3 and is defeated in less than a minute with two blows. That, in short, is what happens in every version, but the execution is what makes each one different.
In the original anime, the fight is extended mainly because of the standard length of a television episode—20 to 23 minutes. More than a fight, it is a long sequence in which Beerus dodges Goku’s attacks until he simply grows tired of playing and counterattacks. In this new version, however, the sequence follows the same order of events while not only looking much better, but also adding elements to its approach that make it different from the other versions.
To begin with, the fight takes up half the episode, and Goku takes his battle against the God of Destruction very seriously. He first transforms into a Super Saiyan, and when he realizes that even this transformation cannot touch the God of Destruction, he gradually increases his power until he uses everything he has in Super Saiyan 3. Beerus, on the other hand, acts differently than in the other versions. He no longer underestimates or plays with his opponent; instead, he analyzes him with interest from beginning to end.
Beerus had gone in search of a warrior who could challenge him and stand out enough to provide him with some entertainment—the one he calls the “Super Saiyan God.” During his long life, he had already encountered the Saiyan race, but this was the first time he had met one audacious enough to challenge him to a one-on-one battle. All he knew about Goku was that he had earned the distinction of defeating Emperor Frieza, which automatically established him as the most formidable mortal in the universe he ruled. Thus, after witnessing Goku’s power up close, Beerus placed his hopes in him as the warrior he had been searching for. Unfortunately, Goku did not live up to that ideal during their first encounter.
Despite looking spectacular, history repeated itself for the third time: Goku suffered a crushing defeat, and Beerus set off for Earth to reunite with the Saiyan prince. Everything is happening so quickly that the story is progressing faster than I expected. I think the “Battle of Gods” arc will end in episode 5 or 6. Now fans want to see what the new version of the inevitable rematch between Goku and Beerus will be like. The fight was a work of art in the original movie and a complete disaster in the previous anime, so expectations are high for the new battles that “Dragon Ball Super: Beerus” will present.
It is making a very good impression on me. I expected to see the same thing with better animation, but this remake has already proven to be superior to its predecessor.
