What would happen if instead of landing in the United States, Superman landed in the USSR? Well, the first change can be seen in the poster with the new Soviet symbol™ in Superman's chest. This hypothetical scenario is explored in the new animated movie recently produced by DC. Those that are familiar with how the socialist system works will probably guess what would happen in this case.
Superman becomes a symbol of the socialist ideology and is the main weapon to destroy America, freedom, and capitalism. In the United States, there is Lex Luthor as the person capable enough to figure out a way to protect freedom from this corrupted Superman.
There are some funny lines from Superman where he tells usual marxist rubbish but eventually, he will realize that the utopia he believes is real isn't what it looks like. There are some surprises along the way of course.
Animation wise this movie isn't something very different from what I am used from DC. It isn't the best animated movies from them, but it is nice. It is important to notice that this isn't another Superman vs Luthor movie although it seems like that at the beginning.
There are fights involving other characters, a superhero who surprisingly somehow was also born in the Soviet Union and the appearance of a new major villain who I think I haven't seen before.
The end result is a cool animated movie that is worth the watch, with the added benefit of including a totalitarian government that is mostly forgotten in current films/series.
One of the reasons why I highly enjoyed this animated film, is because there aren't many films condemning one of the worst totalitarian power that existed in the modern world, the Soviet Union. There are tons of movies condemning Nazism and their atrocities but sadly the same cannot be said about the even bigger atrocities perpetrated by the Soviet socialists.
Let's not forget, the Soviets murdered a greater number of people, they destroyed the freedom of a greater number of countries and they imposed their totalitarianism over a greater territory for half a century. Despite this, I think there is not enough rejection and condemnation in popular culture towards this horrible nation, that thankfully doesn't exist anymore, and the ideology they represented.
There are movies with Nazis as villains everywhere I see, recent examples are Jojo Rabbit and the Hunters series from Amazon. But I wonder, where are all the shows and movies with Soviet socialists as the villains? Why are there almost no shows/movies telling the horror stories from this totalitarian hell?
The best
- Good portray of silly soviet beliefs and their way of thinking.
- A villain I haven't seen before.
The worst
- There are better animated movies from DC out there.
