Sometimes it's cool to throw plans out the window and just let things be as they'll be and doing exactly that was what brought me to the lovely little city called Wells in Somerset. We'd been staying in Bath about 35 kilometres away for five days (and loved it) and had heard about a couple things in the Wells area we thought we'd like to see so decided to change plans slightly and head over there.
We weren't there but for three days however spent an awesome time there, a rather quaint place with lovely architecture, soaking up the history of the once-Roman settlement and the stunning architecture found there as we wandered around; we also took a few side trips out from Wells including towards the town of Minehead and Dunster Castle (a short 72 kilometres away) that sits majestically atop a hill not too far away from the town - that's for another post though.
We stayed in an excellent Bed and Breakfast nestled within a lovely little forested area amongst fields of green, just on the outskirts of town which was one of the best we experienced in the UK although, to be fair, they were all excellent and exceeded our expectations.
The collage, a few images down, shows a few of the rooms and the front of the B&B; we couldn't resist some meanderings around the woods and little pathways snaking around the fields and we spent some time in the mornings and evenings in the lovely spaces within the building which felt very welcoming, cultured and inviting...the hospitality of the hosts was second-to-none.
We spent time investigating Wells Cathedral, the earliest reference to which dates back to the year 799, a long time ago, and the Bishop's Castle, images of (parts of) both can be seen in this post but the best ones I have include images of a person I'll not show on the webernets so you'll have to make do. The castle has been home to the Bishops for 800 years and the grounds contain very lovely gardens which are framed by the stone walls and ramparts of the castle and all is surrounded by the moat. It's very cool.
Below is the gatehouse to the castle and the moat of course, the next shows one of the towers which intersperse the ramparted walls all the way around, and notice the arrow-slit windows? They took home-defense seriously, and they needed to.
We're really glad to have added Wells as a destination and with a little extra driving time we actually didn't miss anything else we'd planned; it was a nice base of operations and we have fond memories of it, the friendly people and some really enjoyable meals...there was one night we went for fish and chips and fuck was it good!
