Many churches across Europe have been repurposed in recent decades. Some of the new purposes are thoroughly innovative – for instance, a church in Spain has been turned into a skatepark La Iglesia (literally "Church" in Spanish). Some other conversions might feel a bit offensive – such as when a former church is converted into a bar or even a strip club. If you are interested in buying a church, regardless of your intentions, here's a long list of British religious buildings for sale. I believe you can find similar listings in most European countries.
What happened to St. Elisabeth, an early 20th-century parish church in Aachen, seems quite acceptable – it has become a digital hub. People gather there, likely way more than before, even though the Holy Spirit has been replaced by omnipresent Wi-Fi. And when you witness the Blue Screen of Death, you can still pray for the resurrection of your data. At least, it would be a 100% sincere prayer.
DigitalCHURCH hosted the Hive Meetup in Aachen this weekend. You could hardly find a better place downtown. Hats off to @detlev for organizing the bilingual and multinational event with about 25 Hiveans and off-Hive guests participating. I hope we onboarded one startup (Hive performs better than Polygon at the end of the day!) and the Aachen University Blockchain Club – where else should such a club promote its activities? Its president even gave one of the presentations. How often can you shake hands with Mr. President anyway?
Besides promoting Propolis Wiki, which, by the way, still needs more contributors and rewards the best of them every week, my topic for the event was the future and long-term sustainability of WorldMappin. I am glad the core team is on the same page, and WorldMappin will push the bar, already set high by Pinmapple, even higher. There are loads of work ahead, but we are sure it is worth it – for the sake of Hive and for avid travelers like myself.
And that is the keen message to anyone reading this post. Hive is not a company managed by a C-level board with some hidden stakeholders pulling the strings or anything even remotely similar. Hive is a community of open-minded people with equal accounts, where the only difference is the Hive Power they control. And, perhaps, the good or bad reputation people have gained based on their previous deeds and claims. If you want something to be done, why not step up to the plate? Somebody is always willing to back up any meaningful project, and they are just one comment or a single DM on Discord far from you.
Having venues like digitalCHURCH is a blessing (well, the pope might disagree on this one, but he does not have a profile here yet). And so is having people willing to hold such events. Consider it an invitation to the next HiveBuzz Party – depending on where it will be – or Hive Fest, which I am 100% going to attend. By the way, did you know there was a reimbursement fund for overseas attendees?
