...the blow that sent him reeling came from left field so quickly that he didn't see it coming.

In my opinion, that blow should have come much earlier. Kendrick had me shaking my head through most of this story. His attitude and teenage defiance showed that he really thought he had an answer for everything. You captured the issue of teenagers and peer pressure very well. Sometimes they pick up and use derogatory words and phrases as though they make them sound cool or grownup without thinking about what those words actually mean or the hurt they can cause.

I'm also glad Malcolm didn't dismiss his son's attitude as "kids being kids". Instead he made Kendrick think about the words and the impact they could have. One careless choice of words turned what started as a peaceful Saturday morning into a difficult one for both him and his parents. A satisfying ending with Kendrick realising he had something to apologise for!

An interesting and well-written piece. Do take care and have a beautiful day. 🌹

  • Those teen years can be somewhat difficult for them and for parents as they navigate the path to young adult. It's so funny when I think of it because I, and I'm sure many other teens, including my friends, thought we had the answer to everything. We relied on each other for information about items that none of us knew what we were talking about. I heard so much wrong information I could write a book.

It was only when I stopped listening and started reading for myself that I could correct them. The sad part about it was that they didn't want to hear the "real truth" about matters they were discussing. It was much more dicier to conjure up half-truths.

Anytime my children would spit out "all my friends"...I stop them dead in their tracks. Parents who address issues instead of just "kids will be kids" and "that's teenagers for you" are responsible adults in my opinion. Whether the child listens or not is up to them. At least, the parents will have done their parts. That's all that can be asked.

And yes, sometimes you have to go "old school" to get your point across. I experienced many "old school" methods, and I survived much wiser for it. Especially the eye rolls. They caused me much distress until I finally ceased the practice! lolol.

Thanks so much for stopping by and viewing my story. I was hoping the prompt didn't scare readers away not wanting to engage with it. Take care and have a nice rest of your week.
