Aki no Yonaga — Autumn’s Long Evenings [English and Japanese]

photo-output.png

In Japan, we have an old expression, Aki no Yonaga (秋の夜長), which refers to the long evenings of autumn. I feel that our evenings are getting darker and darker day by day. I saw the first frost this morning after last night's cold temperatures. I don't mind the colder nights and mornings, but I'm still hoping we'll have plenty of sunshine during the day, like we did today.

Soon, daylight saving time will end in November, which always confuses me again. I'll need to wake up earlier in the mornings... I've finally gotten used to calculating the time difference, but just when I start getting the hang of it, it changes again! I think I'd rather enjoy the long autumn evenings instead.

Anyway, most of the trees in my yard have almost finished shedding their leaves, except for a few. Of course, the evergreens always look fresh and green. I've noticed that we have more oak trees on our property than I thought. A few years ago, my husband wanted to have an oak tree, so he planted one. It's still tiny and seems to be struggling a little to survive. However, the other oak trees that sprouted naturally in our backyard look so healthy and tall now. We probably have lots of squirrels on our property, so they must have planted seeds everywhere! Nature's power is always wonderful.

I took this photo with my phone camera. I always wish our phone cameras had a setting for taking pictures of birds. As you can see, the eagle's face is blurry. The eagles were so close to me, but taking good photos isn't always easy.

I think I was lucky to see them, or perhaps I needed to see eagles these days for my mental well-being. I'd been overthinking so many things that kept going around and around in my head. Then, I saw some eagles very close to me two days in a row. They immediately stopped my busy mind. Literally, I briefly forgot what I'd been thinking about. After seeing them, I noticed that my mind had definitely calmed down compared to before. Nature's power always gives me something truly important, that's for sure.

The reflection of autumn colours in the river is also beautiful. There are so many different shades of red. I think I like the vivid, pinkish one in this photo the best.

The water has been so calm lately. I saw some ducklings with their mother on this day. I guess they're leaving this area soon to head somewhere warmer. It's not just humans who are preparing for winter. Everyone is!

The autumn rain keeps making the temperature drop here. Our summer yard projects are still underway, but we have to put them on hold until next spring. Sometimes, rain gives us a break at just the right time.

Sumac trees are so pretty. To me, they look as if they're wearing kimonos. Their long sleeves are changing colours so beautifully.

Here they are again, the eagle couple. They looked so gentle with each other as they sat in the same tree like this. I imagine they're very caring partners and perfect mates for life. I hope I can see them even closer next time. I've been hoping for that for years, and this time, I got closer to them than ever before. Maybe next time I'll get an even closer look!
