My Actifit Report & Ulog: March 31 2019

Another day dedicated to the garden. And so will be the next and the next and the day after.

Gia and I are taken in what we all want to accomplish today. She mostly wants to play and follow us around, I mostly want to get things done.

This year, we have had more rain than the last few years put together. That means a couple of things.

Everything- mostly weeds - has been growing like crazy.

See the blue tub overflowing with weeds? I have taken so many to the chicken area in the last few days that I can't remember how many.

At the same time, the soil is softer than it has been in a long time. It is the ideal time to work in the garden!!!

My roommate and Gia found some purple peas I had planted a while ago and forgot about. We all tasted them right off the vine and they are so delicious.

They even get your hands purple. It washes off but I was impressed!!

You are looking at our dinner - together with some potatoes we harvested today as well. New potatoes are truly a treat.

Also, in our area, it is time to get the summer garden going. And it is also time to tune in the irrigation or nothing will be growing in a little while.

My roommate worked on getting some micro-spray irrigation setup into the black circular raised beds. We had rescued them from her garden when she had to move from her house.

I tackled this area in the meantime that is kind of the forgotten area, the boneyard so to speak. Everything not in use but maybe needed later ends up there.

We happily let the nettles grow there because they make a wonderful and healthy tea and are good in soups and salads. But once they have gone to seed, that is pretty much the end of that. I pulled them all out and collected them in a big trashcan. I will let them soak in water for a couple of days - the liquid makes an excellent fertilizer.

I brought lots of the other plants to the chickens. They love the oats and some of the other greens as well. But I also layed a bunch of them down where I pulled or chopped them. Right now, they are protecting the soil from getting fried by the sun. As soon as I can, I am covering them with mulch and they will be part of the soil building process.

I have spread so much mulch all over the yard that the soil is actually pretty good.

In the very first picture, you see a pile of wood in the middle of the (weed) lawn. I moved that out of the way and mowed the whole area with a push mower.

IMG_0990.jpg

My roommate used the weedwhacker to get to the areas the push mower will not reach. I just booked my ticket to meet up with my husband and the yard needs to be taken care off by the time I am leaving. Tic Toc.

Miss Gia and I also went for a walk and I cut the rest of the tree trimmings to compost pile size. The deck is clear again. Yay.

I can't help is but I have to show you the salad we had for lunch. I love to go out in the garden and pick my meal...

What a beautiful garden you have! And a sweet doggo. I love Goldens. <3 I have to ask about the really cool arch you have! Do some plants vine up it like a trellis later in the season?

  • @nurseanne84(69)· 2713d

Doggo seems to happy. I love living your life. Fresh food, gardening, just being with the dog.........

Grasses everywhere, same thing here and the rain hasn't really started. Well done on your count.

We are about to face the same situation as we head into our rainy season - the signs are already starting after a heavy downpour in March. There is nothing nicer than new potatoes, butter and mint. And fresh peas. Those purple ones look divine. Here in SA they are colouring a gin with their flowers. Makes me think I should look for some seeds - such fun to have flowers and different colours on our plates. After all, contrary to what The Husband thinks, we do eat with our eyes!
