The Blood Moon

My son and his wife are on holiday in Zihuatanejo, Mexico to escape this dreary time of year in Chicago. They are enjoying the small town vibe, great food and the fact that taxis only cost $4.

They got these great photos of the moon while they waited for it to turn red and they wanted me to share them here.

What exactly causes a "Blood Moon"? A "Blood Moon" happens during a total lunar eclipse, when the sun, Earth and the moon align in that order. Long wavelengths of sunlight are refracted through Earth's atmosphere before reaching the moon, which reflects them in reddish hues that may resemble the color of blood

Wow! I love any kind of astronomical or astrological phenomena, it's like the greatest show on Earth, unless of course you live here in the UK where it is either raining or overcast for 364.2 days of the year and you get to see very little...

So it is nice to live vicariously through the exploits and efforts to record from others and this is breath-taking, the moon has always been such a source of mystery and the fact that we can see it in such fabulous detail without the necessity of a huge observatory costing millions is a joy that makes you glad to be alive today.

Your blood moon photos are absolutely stunning! 🌕🔴 Capturing such a celestial event with such clarity is truly impressive. If this had been seen in India, so many superstitions and rumors would have spread....some calling it a bad omen, others a sign of something mystical! 😅 Your post helps people appreciate this beautiful astronomical event scientifically. Hello Melinda! How interesting! This phenomenon occurs naturally and frequently on the northernmost coasts of Venezuela. Legends about this phenomenon arose during the time of the Conquest, more than 500 years ago. It was said that the scarlet moon, when it appeared, was a sign cursing the conquistadors for seeking the City of the Sun, also known as "El Dorado." Best regards. !BBH
