Guest Appearance, 20,000 Steps, and Reflections on the Way Back Yesterday, I had the opportunity to step in as a substitute at one of the kindergartens run by our foundation. It was an emergency situation – the teacher got sick, and as we all know, children can’t be put on hold. The kindergarten is located in a charming old townhouse and consists of just one mixed-age group – from three- to seven-year-olds. That alone made it an interesting experience for me. Such a group is a real mosaic of needs, emotions, and abilities. Younger children absorb everything like sponges and look up to the older ones, while the older kids can feel important and needed – sometimes even like little teachers. But I must admit, balancing the educational and developmental needs of such a diverse group is quite a challenge. You have to move between storytelling and letters, between building block towers and reading simple sentences. I’m very grateful for the opportunity – every such experience broadens your perspective and teaches humility. At the same time, I realized how much I love my own kindergarten. I love that I can ask for help if I need it, that I’m not alone, that we have our own methods, routines, and rhythm. Instead of taking public transport, I decided to walk home – just for myself. The air smelled like spring, the city was buzzing with life, and I had time and space for some reflection. Along the way, I even managed to buy a birthday gift for Sara’s friend – she’s going to a party on Saturday! Summary of the day? 20,979 steps on the counter, a head full of impressions, and the reassurance that sometimes it’s worth stepping out of your comfort zone just to appreciate what you have. Sytuacja awaryjna – zachorowała nauczycielka, a dzieci, jak wiadomo, nie mogą czekać. Przedszkole mieści się w klimatycznej kamienicy i składa się z jednej, mieszanej grupy wiekowej – od trzylatków aż po siedmiolatki. Już samo to było dla mnie ciekawym doświadczeniem. Taka grupa to prawdziwa mozaika potrzeb, emocji i możliwości. Młodsze dzieci chłoną jak gąbka i podziwiają starszych, a starszaki mogą poczuć się ważne i potrzebne – czasem nawet jak mali nauczyciele. Ale przyznam, że pogodzenie edukacyjnych i wychowawczych potrzeb tak zróżnicowanego grona to nie lada wyzwanie. Trzeba balansować między bajką a literkami, między budowaniem wieży z klocków a próbą czytania pierwszych zdań. Jestem bardzo wdzięczna za tę okazję – każde takie doświadczenie poszerza horyzonty i uczy pokory. Jednocześnie utwierdziłam się w przekonaniu, jak bardzo lubię swoje przedszkole. Lubię to, że w razie potrzeby mogę się poradzić, że nie jestem sama, że mamy swoje sposoby, rytuały i rytm. Zamiast wracać komunikacją, zdecydowałam się na spacer – tak po prostu, dla siebie. Powietrze pachniało wiosną, miasto żyło swoim rytmem, a ja złapałam przestrzeń na przemyślenia. Po drodze udało mi się jeszcze kupić prezent na urodziny koleżanki Sary – bo w sobotę wybieramy się na imprezę! Podsumowanie dnia? 20979 kroków na liczniku, głowa pełna wrażeń i przekonanie, że warto czasem wyjść ze swojej strefy komfortu, żeby docenić to, co się ma.

What a wonderful and enriching experience that must have been. Stepping into such a diverse and dynamic group sounds both challenging and rewarding. It’s amazing how the younger kids learn so much from the older ones, and how the older children get to feel responsible and valued.
