This is the fourth stage of my trip to Guadeloupe.
We left Haute Terre, where we had visited the mangroves, for a drive that took us to Basse Terre in Bouillante. It was quite a hassle as it was dark and we had to take the crossing road, which I don't recommend at night. The road is quite narrow and full of bends, often hairpin bends, all uphill and downhill with deep ditches, and I was really scared. As I was driving slowly, I often had cars tailgating me, which added to my stress. But we arrived safely at our rental house. It was ideally located, facing Ilet Pigeon in the Cousteau reserve. We had a large terrace at our disposal, facing this ilet, and we were able to enjoy some beautiful sunsets. We stayed here for 3 days and were able to take advantage of a kayak to sail around a bit and, above all, snorkeling, which enabled us to see some magnificent fish and a turtle.
The next day, we headed north to the botanical gardens of Deshaies. This is the former property of French comedian Coluche, which he entrusted to a botanist friend to develop, and which was transformed into a park after his death. There is an entrance fee, but it's a beautiful, well-kept place with many varieties of trees and plants, as well as animals. There are explanatory panels, including on the history of the introduction of species to the island. For example, breadfruit trees were introduced to provide food for the slaves. A small path winds through the park, giving us several viewpoints, and we are not disturbed by the other visitors, who are nevertheless numerous, as this is a very touristy place. Children love it here, as you can enter some of the aviaries and feed the birds flower nectar (sold at the entrance).

The tree in the last photo struck a chord with me when I read the explanatory panel; it lives for around 80 years, and only flowers once, just before it dies. Its size is impressive, and each of its branches weighs 50 kilos.

Je raconte la suite de mon voyage en Guadeloupe, c'est notre quatrième étape.
Nous avons quitté la Haute Terre où nous avions visité la mangrove pour un trajet en voiture qui nous à amenés sur Basse Terre à Bouillante. Ce fut assez pénible car il faisait nuit et nous avons emprunté la route de la traversée, je ne recommande pas cet itinéraire de nuit. La route est assez étroite et pleine de virages, souvent en épingle à cheveux, toute en montées et descentes avec des fossés profonds et j'ai eu vraiment peur. Comme je roulais doucement, j'avais souvent des voitures qui me collaient derrière et ça rajoutait à mon stress. Mais nous sommes arrivés sans encombre à notre maison de location. Elle était idéalement située, face à l'Ilet Pigeon de la réserve Cousteau. Nous avions une grande terrasse à disposition, face à cet ilet et nous avons pu profiter de beaux couchers de soleil. Nous sommes restés 3 jours ici et avons pu profiter d'un kayak pour naviguer un peu et surtout faire du snorkeling ce qui nous a permis de voir de magnifiques poissons et une tortue.
Le lendemain nous sommes allés au jardin botanique de Deshaies plus au nord. C'est une ancienne propriété du comique français Coluche qu'il a confié à un ami botaniste pour l'aménager puis qui s'est transformé après sa disparition en parc. L'entrée est payante, mais c'est un endroit magnifique et très bien entretenu avec de nombreuses variétés d'arbres et de plantes ainsi que des animaux. Il y a des panneaux explicatifs y compris sur l'histoire de l'introduction des espèces sur l'ile. On apprend ainsi que les arbres à pain ont été introduits afin de fournir de la nourriture pour les esclaves. Un petit chemin serpente dans le parc ce qui nous permet d'avoir plusieurs points de vue et on n'est pas gêné par les autres visiteurs qui sont cependant nombreux car c'est un lieu très touristique. Les enfants adorent car on peut entrer dans certaines volières et donner à manger du nectar de fleurs (vendu à l'entrée) aux oiseaux.
J'espère que les photos vous plairont, je ne me rappelle plus du nom des arbres et des fleurs, il y en avait tellement.
L'arbre sur la dernière photo m'a touché quand j'ai lu le panneau explicatif, il vit environ 80 ans, et ne fleurit qu'une fois, juste avant de mourir. Sa taille est impressionnante et chacune de ses branches pèse 50 kilos.
