Pre-ordering food in the Economy class on my Austrian (Lufthansa) flight failed last time I tried it 🙈

https://www.pre-flight-shopping.com/en/

bzw. bei Lufthansa:

https://www.lufthansa.com/at/en/special-meals

Was sagt ihr dazu?

How to pre-order food in the Economy class on your Austrian / Lufthansa flight

Austrian Airlines: https://www.pre-flight-shopping.com/en/

Lufthansa: https://www.lufthansa.com/at/en/special-meals

English

Austrian Airlines (Lufthansa) offers you to pre-order a (hot) sandwich or dish in Economy Class before your flight to ensure that it is available on the flight.

Austrian even has a dedicated website for this, which was not easy to find. On the Austrian website, go to Book & Prepare > Special requests > Special meals:

https://www.pre-flight-shopping.com/en/

or at Lufthansa:

https://www.lufthansa.com/at/en/special-meals

I recently tried this service on my return flight from Bucharest to Vienna, but unfortunately it didn't work again. On the outbound flight, there was not a single hot meal available from the menu without pre-ordering.

Although I had pre-ordered the mozzarella sandwich online the day before with the flight number, it was not available on the flight itself. That was annoying.

The cabin crew couldn't tell me why, but offered me a free drink as a gesture of goodwill. That was nice, but there was a catch.

The selection of free drinks was somewhat limited 🙈 I actually wanted to try a café latte drink from Economy Class, but I had to pay for it myself.

I understand that you have to pre-order hot sandwiches on Austrian/Lufthansa to save resources, but the process is a bit tedious compared to other airlines. On Ryanair, for example, it has never been a problem to order a hot snack/meal on board even without pre-ordering.

In addition, Austrian Economy tickets are usually much more expensive than those of other low-cost airlines. In my opinion, the service should also be better, but this is often no longer the case.

There is hardly any difference between flying Economy with Austrian/Lufthansa or a low-cost airline any more.

I have since found out why the pre-order didn't work. You have to order the sandwich 31-36 hours before the flight; in my case, it was about 30 hours before departure. That's probably why it didn't work. Lufthansa on the other hand claims, "special meals can be ordered up to 24 hours before departure".

What do you think? Have you ever pre-ordered a sandwich on a flight? Did you know that Austrian and Lufthansa offer this service?

I have never pre-ordered food on a flight, but it sounds like bad service if they can't give you what you ordered.

no i wasn't aware of it.

I never pre-ordered any food for a flight. I kind of understand the fact that these orders have to be placed a certain time before the flight, since in some cases it can probably take some time to get the food. I assume it also depends on where you're flying from.

I guess if you did miss the deadline for pre-order it's more or less on you and them offering a free drink is a nice gesture, but then limiting the selection like that seems weird in my opinion. Also if there is a deadline for the pre-orders, why is it possible to place an order after the deadline? They could just decline the order and tell you that it's too late.

I've never pre-orered a meal on a flight but that sounds annoying as F.

  • @takhar(72)· 414d

I didn't know such services exist. I'm guessing there's a limited range of what can be pre-ordered too?

  • @mein-senf-dazu(75)· 414d

Also 24 std.

Bin bisher wenig geflogen. Was waren das? 10g? !LOL.

I never pre-ordered anything on planes, just choosed between what they offer... It is probably annoying for their logistics but they don't want to look bad so they take the order and then don't care🤣
