The Return to the Depths
Part 1
Escape Through the Ruins
A dull crack echoed, followed by an icy breath seeping through the cracks of the old building. The walls trembled under the impact, as if an invisible force sought to reduce them to dust. Lucien felt his heart race. He shot a panicked glance at Hubert, who, wide-eyed, seemed unable to move.
A sharp noise rang out behind them. The door had just exploded into splinters.
A shifting darkness slowly stretched through the gaping opening. It advanced silently, creeping into the room like a living veil, sliding across the stone floor. Within those shadows, indistinct shapes stirred, moving with an unsettling slowness.
Lucien felt a shiver run down his spine. He couldn’t stay there.
— “Which way out?!” he whispered, his voice trembling.
The old woman, who had been frozen until now, nodded gravely. With a quick motion, she grabbed the corner of a worn rug and lifted it, revealing a dark wooden hatch embedded with symbols half-erased by time.
— “This passage leads to the ancient ruins beneath Trésorville. Run… and don’t look back.”
Lucien didn’t have time to ask questions. A guttural roar echoed through the room, making the air vibrate. He lunged for the hatch, yanked it open, and dropped into the void, pulling Hubert with him.
As they fell, they heard the old woman muttering words in an ancient language. Then the hatch slammed shut violently.
Silence fell.
Lucien rolled onto the cold floor, breathless. Above them, a powerful wind blew, and a dark glow briefly seeped through the gaps in the wood.
Then… nothing.
Lucien exchanged a glance with Hubert.
— “She’s going to hold them off…” the latter gasped, panting.
— “But for how long?”
Before them stretched a dark, winding tunnel, its damp air smelling of earth and mystery.
They had no choice. They had to move forward.

Le Retour dans les Profondeurs
Partie 1
La Fuite à Travers les Ruines
Un craquement sourd retentit, suivi d’un souffle glacé qui s’infiltra à travers les fissures de la vieille bâtisse. Les murs tremblèrent sous l’impact, comme si une force invisible cherchait à les réduire en poussière. Lucien sentit son cœur s’emballer. Il jeta un regard paniqué à Hubert, qui, les yeux écarquillés, ne parvenait pas à bouger.
Un bruit sec résonna derrière eux. La porte venait d’exploser en éclats.
Une obscurité mouvante s’étira lentement à travers l’ouverture béante. Elle avançait sans bruit, s’insinuant dans la pièce comme un voile vivant, glissant sur le sol de pierre. À l’intérieur de ces ténèbres, des formes indistinctes s’agitaient, se déplaçant avec une lenteur inquiétante.
Lucien sentit un frisson lui parcourir l’échine. Il ne pouvait pas rester là.
— « Par où sortir ?! » souffla-t-il, la voix tremblante.
La vieille femme, jusqu’alors figée, hocha la tête d’un air grave. D’un geste rapide, elle saisit le coin d’un tapis élimé et le souleva, révélant une trappe de bois sombre incrustée de symboles à moitié effacés par le temps.
— « Ce passage mène aux anciennes ruines sous Trésorville. Courez… et ne vous retournez pas. »
Lucien n’eut pas le temps de poser de questions. Un rugissement guttural résonna dans la pièce, faisant vibrer l’air. Il plongea sur la trappe, l’ouvrit d’un coup sec et se laissa tomber dans le vide, entraînant Hubert avec lui.
Dans leur chute, ils entendirent la vieille femme murmurer des mots dans une langue ancienne. Puis la trappe se referma violemment.
Le silence tomba.
Lucien roula sur le sol froid, le souffle court. Au-dessus d’eux, un vent puissant souffla, et une lueur sombre s’infiltra brièvement entre les interstices du bois.
Puis… plus rien.
Lucien échangea un regard avec Hubert.
— « Elle va les retenir… » souffla ce dernier, haletant.
— « Mais pour combien de temps ? »
Devant eux s’étendait un tunnel sombre et sinueux, dont l’air humide sentait la terre et le mystère.
Ils n’avaient plus le choix. Ils devaient avancer.
