Part 3
Revelations in the Darkness
The absolute darkness engulfed them. Lucien immediately felt his breath catch, as if the darkness itself was stealing the air from his lungs. He wanted to speak, but his throat was constricted by an instinctive terror. Beside him, Hubert muttered an almost inaudible curse, fumbling in the dark to relight the extinguished lantern.
Then, a rustling sound reached their ears.
A strange noise, as if something—or someone—was moving without actually touching the ground. An oppressive sensation rose around them, a presence they could neither see nor comprehend.
Lucien felt chills run down his spine.
"Who are you?!" he shouted into the void.
At first, silence answered him. Then, a whisper, barely perceptible. A voice, carried like a distant wind, its syllables crumbling before they could even be fully heard.
"You carry his shadow... You are bound to him..."
Lucien didn’t understand.
"Who are you talking about?"
The entity didn’t respond immediately. It seemed to be thinking... or perhaps sizing Lucien up, as if weighing the significance of its words before speaking them.
Then, finally, it murmured a name:
"Eldrin..."
Lucien felt his heart stop for a moment.
Eldrin the Sage. The legendary alchemist, the founder of the Kingdom of Secrets. But why was this entity speaking of him now?
"What do you mean? What does Eldrin have to do with me?"
Silence fell again. Lucien felt something brush against his arm, like a cold breeze gliding over his skin. Then the voice returned, more distant, weaker, as if it was gradually fading away.
"He shaped this world... but he also shattered the balance... The price must be paid..."
Lucien felt his stomach tighten.
What price? What debt?
But before he could ask anything, a flickering light burst forth. Hubert had managed to relight the lantern with trembling hands.
The darkness receded slightly, revealing the vast hall and the forgotten remnants. But the shadow... was gone. As if it had never been there.
Lucien exchanged a look with Hubert.
They now knew that what they were seeking was far more dangerous than they had ever imagined.

Le noir absolu les engloutit. Lucien sentit immédiatement son souffle se couper, comme si l'obscurité elle-même lui volait l'air. Il voulut parler, mais sa gorge était nouée par une terreur instinctive. Hubert, à côté de lui, lâcha un juron à peine audible, cherchant à tâtons la lanterne éteinte.
Puis, un bruissement se fit entendre.
Un son étrange, comme si quelque chose—ou quelqu’un—se déplaçait sans réellement toucher le sol. Une sensation oppressante s’éleva autour d’eux, une présence qu’ils ne pouvaient ni voir ni comprendre.
Lucien sentit des frissons lui parcourir la colonne vertébrale.
— « Qui êtes-vous ?! » lança-t-il dans le vide.
Le silence lui répondit d’abord. Puis un murmure, à peine perceptible. Une voix, soufflée comme un vent lointain, dont les syllabes semblaient s’effriter avant même d’être entendues.
— « Tu portes son ombre… Tu es lié à lui… »
Lucien ne comprenait pas.
— « De qui parlez-vous ? »
L’entité ne répondit pas immédiatement. Elle semblait réfléchir… ou peut-être jauger Lucien, comme si elle pesait le poids de ses mots avant de les livrer.
Puis, finalement, elle murmura un nom :
— « Eldrin… »
Lucien sentit son cœur s’arrêter un instant.
Eldrin le Sage. L’alchimiste légendaire, le fondateur du Royaume des Secrets. Mais pourquoi cette entité parlait-elle de lui maintenant ?
— « Que voulez-vous dire ? Qu’est-ce qu’Eldrin a à voir avec moi ? »
Le silence retomba. Lucien sentit quelque chose frôler son bras, comme une brise glaciale glissant sur sa peau. Puis la voix reprit, plus lointaine, plus faible, comme si elle se dissipait peu à peu.
— « Il a façonné ce monde… mais il a aussi brisé l’équilibre… Le prix doit être payé… »
Lucien sentit son estomac se nouer.
Quel prix ? Quelle dette ?
Mais avant qu’il ne puisse demander quoi que ce soit, une lumière vacillante jaillit. Hubert venait de rallumer leur lanterne avec des doigts tremblants.
L’obscurité recula légèrement, révélant l’immense salle et les vestiges oubliés. Mais l’ombre… avait disparu. Comme si elle n’avait jamais été là.
Lucien échangea un regard avec Hubert.
Ils savaient désormais que ce qu’ils cherchaient était bien plus dangereux qu’ils ne l’avaient imaginé.
