English version
There are songs that, when played, lift the spirit, chase away sorrows, and inspire optimism—that’s what happens to me when I listen to Karma Chameleon by Culture Club, a song that, in Boy George’s unmistakable voice, is a hymn to joy. Although it may seem a bit simplistic, this song helped solidify an interesting movement for its time: Anglo-Saxon reggae.
George had just made a huge impact with his artistic debut, the song “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me,” in 1982, and songs by the groups Laid Back (“Sunshine Reggae”) and UB40 (“Red Red Wine”) also immediately became popular, proving that good reggae could be produced outside of Jamaica and without living in the shadow of the great Bob Marley.
Although I wasn't born back then, we listened to a little bit of everything at home, and among the LPs we'd put on to liven up the atmosphere, George's unmistakable voice stood out among the '80s compilations. It was velvety, refreshing, and unique; even though I didn’t understand the lyrics—I admit I used to sing “I’ll Tumblr four you” as “Arroz con pollo”—I enjoyed it just the same.
The same thing happened with Karma Chameleon—the voice and the music were enough to brighten my day, even without knowing the meaning of the lyrics. Later, I watched the video; of course, George’s androgynous image struck me, but by then I already had a certain perspective on some things. I also understood the song’s lyrics, and indeed, it’s a way of looking at life through the lens of authenticity.
With this song, Culture Club rose to the peak of popularity and solidified their identity as a band. It’s a song that speaks to the honesty each of us must have in the face of life’s various situations and also leads us to reflect on prejudice. Living like “chameleons” to please others—which involves adopting the beliefs of others—will eventually turn into karma, as everything done in bad faith will come back with even greater intensity.
The song’s music video presents a combination of elements that complements the theme very well. Set against a Southern backdrop—the Mississippi River—George sings Karma Chameleon amidst a diverse crowd boarding a steamboat. There is no sign of racial, economic, sexual, or social segregation, nor are any judgments passed; everything unfolds in a festive, almost carnival-like atmosphere, while the harmonica chords lend a distinctive touch to the song.
