The song isn’t philosophical at all; it doesn’t have a deep message that you have to analyze or interpret—not at all. It’s a simple song that tells you that if you’re tired, fed up, bored, or don’t know what to do, you should start dancing, let go of everything that’s holding you back, and move your body no matter what others might say.
What’s interesting about “Footloose” is that it was written for the 1984 movie of the same name (a time when really great songs were being made) and, in essence, sums up what the movie is all about. In the movie, dancing is banned, and the young people are tired of these imposed rules and turn to dance and music as a way to express themselves and rebel against the system. No one should ban music, much less dancing, since it’s one of the freest art forms in the world.
And for me, that’s what’s interesting about the song—it doesn’t feel like it’s trying to deliver a political speech. No. To me, it feels like it’s telling you, “If you’re tired of this, well, it’s time to get out of your seat and move.” That’s what it is to me—the song tells you to move, and who cares what people will say.
And well, for me, that’s part of the charm of this song—from the very first second, it hits you full force and serves as a preview of what’s to come, with that infectious energy and ’80s beat so characteristic of the era.
Plus, the sound is accompanied by visuals that are also typical of the era; in the first few seconds of the song, you can feel that essence I’m talking about—the one that defined the style of the ’80s and that so many of us love. I wish that style would make a comeback.
In my opinion, the video is gorgeous, and the way they dance is simply magnificent. For someone like me who can’t dance and has two left feet, watching this video motivates me to move and try to learn how to dance. “Footloose” is about that feeling of routine and being trapped in it. Working eight hours a day, traffic, going home, sleeping, and then the same thing all over again the next day. So the song tells you to disconnect: “Everybody Cut Loose.”
“Footloose” isn’t a particularly long song, but during its nearly three-minute runtime, it’s impossible for anyone who hears it not to get swept up in the rhythm and the good vibes it conveys. As I said before, it’s a song that was written for a movie, but you don’t have to have seen the movie—the song conveys a clear message that everyone can understand.
Well, here’s this beautiful song, full of rhythm and a melody that’s impossible to resist. Enjoy it.
