Today I started my morning drinking coffee and reading the news on my phone, as is my usual habit. But today, the Instagram algorithm showed me a large number of events—violence, deeply unjust and disturbing acts—committed against children, teenagers, women, the elderly, and even the case of a young man who, in self-defense against an alleged sexual assault, killed his attacker.
We live in a world that is becoming more violent, more aggressive, more inhumane, more invasive every day. I even think we're on a countdown to when this will finally end, and no, this isn't drama or exaggeration; it's just that evil is getting worse every day, and the events are unimaginable.
I don't have children, and the topic of motherhood is something I've dedicated many hours of my life to. On one hand, it's my desire to have children, to love them, raise them, and feel that my partner and I have the fruit of our love, to have a good child for society. But I'm afraid because what kind of world will they live in? I know who I would be raising. I would give them guidance and the tools to take care of themselves, to respect others, and to be a good man or woman, with values, with love, a believer in God, and respectful of the law. But having a child these days is complicated; it's like throwing them into a lion's den or leaving them alone and small in the woods.
I believe our society worldwide needs a major purge. I believe that people who live bad lives don't deserve to live. I believe we need a stricter, more coercive world with strong rules, where defending ourselves and our loved ones is a right. But if that were to contribute to violence, then that's not life either.
Today, after reading the news, I started thinking about what the solution could be, where the answer lies... Because the truth is that violence, abuse, harassment, and aggression no longer discriminate based on age or sex. These days, anyone can be a victim or a perpetrator. We are taking giant steps toward a rather disturbing and dark world.
The saddest thing of all is that neither you nor I can solve what is happening, and although the reality of our world is quite harsh, this is the era in which we live. There are bad things, but there are also good things, and although today the algorithm worked against me, it is also true that I thanked God for allowing me to have my bubble of peace, security, and tranquility. And although anything can happen tomorrow, I must be grateful that today I am not part of that enormous list of people who suffer from the evil that reigns on Earth.
Sometimes we have to be a little selfish, or reserved with our mental health, because it's the only way to survive what's happening around us... It's not ignoring reality, it's self-care and self-love, it's being grateful for who we are and what we have, it's taking care of our bubble, our center and our peace.
