Hola !! Bienvenidos queridos visitantes 🌿 | Hello!! Welcome dear visitors 🌿
I am a cactus enthusiast. Quite some time ago, I acquired a type of cactus different from those already in my collection of succulents and cacti. Not long ago, I heard a woman say that all cacti produce beautiful flowers; while I knew that some do, I honestly believed that not all of them did.
I was surprised to notice—without having realized it earlier—that one of my cacti had a very peculiar bud; I thought to myself that I had never seen that type of flower before. Out of curiosity, I waited to see what kind of flower it would be and what color. I had seen such giant flowers in the past, but I hadn't realized they started out with such a huge bud, which is why I was so surprised.
Giant Stapelia flower.
Intrigued by this cactus flower, I began to look into it and discovered that the Stapelia—the common name for this bloom—has a peculiar odor, reminiscent of rotting meat. It sounds unbelievable, but it’s true; I didn’t fully believe it until my patio was filled with this scent, which—curiously enough—began to attract certain insects, primarily flies, to the flower, even as its petals were just starting to open.
The flower began to open a week after its bud had formed. It typically emits a putrid odor that attracts certain flies—the method it uses to achieve this is truly remarkable and curious! 😅🤭 This process allows the flower to be pollinated with the help of these flies and other insects. While it is not a carnivorous plant, it could easily be mistaken for one, as it attracts insects in a manner similar to certain carnivorous species—though, unlike those, it does not actually feed on its own pollinators.
Stapelia flowers come in various colors; the one I have is a sort of dull yellow, and its interior has a texture that looks like tiny white hairs mixed with deep red (burgundy) strands—from a distance, you can better see how the white and deep red colors blend together. It has five petals and is nearly the size of my hand!😳
At the center of the flower, there is a small, deep red blossom, which is the primary source of its putrid odor. Despite this, when fully open, it looked truly beautiful. This is the first time this plant in my garden has bloomed—it has only ever done so once—and I thoroughly enjoyed witnessing this floral spectacle. It remained open for about three weeks; eventually, it withered and fell off, and the cycle will repeat itself when the next flowering season arrives.
I hope you really liked this lovely flower! 😅 I’ll soon share my cactus collection and how I take care of them. Best regards, and thanks for visiting!
