Hello everyone, have a nice day to you all, hope everyone's doing great today where ever part of the world you are right now.. This morning, while I was sweeping the mango leaves along the side of our house, I suddenly heard a familiar bird sound. I immediately tried to find where the sound was coming from. If I was not mistaken, I thought the bird I was hearing might be a kind of coucal. It is not often seen because there are only a few of them around. I donβt know if they are more common in other parts of the country, but here in our area, I only see this kind of bird occasionally. I was not mistaken about what I heard. It really was a Philippine coucal, a bird that can only be found here in the Philippines. It was perched on a tree, so I quickly grabbed my camera and took some photos of it. And these are the photos I was able to capture.
The Philippine coucal has a glossy black head and body with dark chesnut or reddish brown wings it features a long broad and heavy black tail.. it has striking red eyes
When we were young, we were told not to hurt or catch birds like this, especially the white ones, because they were believed to be pets of the engkanto, or supernatural beings. They said that if you caught one and kept it in a cage, the engkanto would come to your house and shake it until you released their pet bird. Of course, this is only an old belief passed down by the elders in our community. But from then until now, no one has ever tried to catch or hurt this bird. When I tried to get closer to take a better photo, it suddenly flew away. I did not see where it went, but sometimes I can still hear it from a distance. Today, I was lucky because it happened to come closer and perch on a tree near us, giving me the chance to take some photos of it.
