It has been nearly five years since the disaster of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy—a collection that promised to modernize three of Rockstar Games' most iconic titles but ended up becoming one of the company's most controversial releases.
Now, for the first time, the head of Grove Street Games has spoken openly about that situation, acknowledging that much of the criticism from players was justified.

Thomas Williamson, CEO of the studio responsible for developing the remastered trilogy, broke his silence during a recent interview.
He admitted that the game launched with obvious issues and that the team was fully aware the final result did not meet the expectations surrounding a franchise as significant as Grand Theft Auto.

The collection's 2021 launch was marred by performance issues, graphical glitches, questionable character models, flawed animations, and numerous bugs that quickly went viral on social media. The negative response was so significant that Rockstar ultimately issued an official apology and announced an update plan to fix most of the issues identified by the community.
Despite that rocky start, Williamson explained that the studio's internal statistics revealed a reality somewhat different from public perception.
He noted that millions of players continued to enjoy the collection, spending many hours revisiting Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas. In the developer's view, the massive media attention surrounding the bugs ended up overshadowing the fact that a large number of users were satisfied with the experience.

The executive also believes that nostalgia played a major role in how the project was received. The original titles are considered absolute industry classics, meaning any visual or technical changes were bound to be scrutinized far more rigorously than usual. That emotional connection to the games caused many fans to react more harshly to any differences from the original versions.
Over the years, Rockstar has continued to release patches to improve the collection. These updates introduced hundreds of fixes, general optimizations, and a new lighting system inspired by the classic games—changes that significantly improved the experience compared to the initial launch.

The relationship between Rockstar and Grove Street Games also went through some tense moments. A new controversy arose in 2024 when an update removed the studio's logo from the game's splash screen.
Williamson publicly criticized the move, asserting that erasing credit for the lead team was not the proper way to treat the work done—especially since many of the incorporated fixes had been developed by his studio.

Although the passage of time has allowed the GTA Trilogy to improve significantly, its launch is still remembered as one of Rockstar Games' biggest controversies. Williamson's recent statements mark the first clear admission that the project fell short of expectations;
at the same time, they acknowledge the validity of the community's criticism, while also reminding us that—despite all the issues—millions of players enjoyed revisiting three of the most important adventures in Grand Theft Auto history.
