Today we are talking about cancel games, few canceled PlayStation projects have generated as much curiosity as The Last of Us Online. Although Naughty Dog officially pulled the plug on the multiplayer title in 2023, many fans never stopped wondering what could have been. Now, thanks to the work of a dedicated modder, the dream of exploring a multiplayer version of The Last of Us Part II is beginning to feel more real than ever.

The project is being developed by a modder known as Speclizer, who has spent months working on bringing multiplayer functionality to the PC version of the game. While this isn't the canceled title that Naughty Dog originally planned, it is an ambitious fan-made recreation inspired by the same concept. Even more impressive, development appears to be progressing faster than many expected.
One of the biggest milestones achieved so far is support for 4v4 matches. Earlier versions of the mod were limited to simple one-on-one gameplay, but recent updates demonstrate that larger multiplayer battles are now possible. Videos shared by the creator showcase players exploring maps together while testing combat mechanics and networking systems, suggesting that the project has moved well beyond the experimental stage.

The improvements don't stop there. Speclizer has also implemented several features players would expect from a complete multiplayer experience. These include map selection, equipment loadouts, matchmaking functionality, and even a working leaderboard system. Multiple playable locations have already been added, with more environments expected before the project's planned release later this year.
Of course, significant technical challenges remain. One of the biggest obstacles involves synchronizing character animations across multiple players. Naughty Dog's games are famous for their incredibly fluid and detailed animations, many of which were designed exclusively for single-player gameplay. Reproducing that same level of quality in an online environment is a difficult task, but the developer continues to make steady progress toward solving these issues.

The growing excitement surrounding the mod also reflects the disappointment many players still feel over Sony's decision to cancel The Last of Us Online. Earlier this year, former game director Vinit Agarwal revealed that the official multiplayer project was approximately 80% complete before it was canceled after years of development. According to him, the decision was made because continuing development would have required Naughty Dog to dedicate long-term resources to a live-service game instead of focusing on future single-player experiences.

Those revelations only increased fans' curiosity about what the finished game might have looked like. Some former developers have even described it as one of the best multiplayer experiences they had ever worked on, making its cancellation even more painful for longtime followers of the series.
Speclizer's project cannot replace the official game that was lost, it may become the closest thing fans ever receive. If development continues at its current pace, PC players could soon experience a community-built multiplayer mode that captures at least part of Naughty Dog's original vision. It serves as a reminder that even when major studios abandon ambitious ideas, passionate fans often find creative ways to keep them alive.
