A Burnt Tongue and Brilliant Coffee in Bilbao

nominated by @millycf1976 · curator vote 10%

We had a lovely afternoon sitting outside at a coffee shop called Bizu Bi, located right in the Plaza de Santiago within the old town, Casco Viejo in Bilbao.

The atmosphere was very chilled, especially with a man nearby playing the guitar while we ate and drank.

We sat outside under the large cream-coloured umbrellas, which gave us shade as it was still quite warm. The architecture above the café featured apartments painted in pale yellow and terracotta, with traditional Spanish iron balconies and window shutters.

I ordered a Jamaicano coffee, which is a layered drink made with rum, espresso, and cream. I've had rum in coffee before, but it was never as good as this. The rum was at the bottom, hot coffee in the middle, and a thick dollop of whipped cream and cinnamon on top. It certainly packed a punch! My friend wanted something refreshing and chose an orange juice. It was certainly a contrast to mine, as I see coffee and rum as more of a winter treat.

The only issue I had was that I'm so used to drinking cold drinks through a straw that I forgot it was hot coffee and burnt my tongue! The straw was made of paper, so although it was environmentally friendly, it collapsed and wasn't much use. 😆

My friend also had patatas fritas con queso y bacon, which basically means cheesy chips (or fries) with bacon. I wasn't very hungry, so I just pinched a few cheesy chips that hadn’t been touched by the bacon, as I'm a vegetarian.

It really is one of the best little corners in Bilbao to just sit back, enjoy a coffee, and watch the world go by!

  • A classic traveler's experience: getting so excited about good coffee that you forget it's hot. 😂 But it's definitely worth it, especially in Bilbao with its unique vibe. Thank you for sharing this relatable little story. Makes me want to travel and hunt for coffee shops too.
