When summer temperatures skyrocket, staying active means making a few adjustments. These days, if I want to get outside for my regular morning walk without melting, there is only one option and hit the woods before the heat sets in.

Today, I started early and headed down a quiet, shaded woodland path. Getting out in the cool morning air just as the sun was rising over the top of the trees was the highlight of the walk. The bright pink fireweed (willowherb) looked pretty running along the edge of the gravel trail.

Deep in the woods, the tree canopy blocks out most of the direct heat, leaving dappled sunlight on the ground and plenty of shade along the dirt trails.

Looking up, you can see how tall the pine trees are, stretching way up into a clear blue sky.

Further along, the morning sun brought out the local wildlife. I was lucky enough to spot a couple of Painted Lady butterflies resting on a thistle flower. They love these flowers.

I only had my mobile phone with me, so I zoomed in so as not to disturb them.

I decided to walk back along the country lane. Right next to the woods, there was a lovely old stone wall covered in greenery. By the time the sun was fully up and the temperature began to climb, I was already heading home, having enjoyed the shade and scenery.

If you are trying to stay active during a hot spell, I cannot recommend early morning walks enough. You get the best light, cooler air, and the entire place to yourself!
