On a sunny day in Heidelberg’s Old Town, while on a motorhome holiday travelling through Germany, we sat outside under huge white patio umbrellas at Gasthaus zum Eisernen Kreuz.
Positioned directly across the cobblestones from its historic 1800s building, the terrace seating offered a nice view of the traditional pub while we enjoyed our drinks and meal. The Old Town had such a lively atmosphere on a warm day, with people strolling along the historic streets. I was glad to get some shade from the sun.
We ordered a regular cappuccino, which arrived nicely presented. The milk foam was thick, silky, and topped off with a dusting of cocoa powder. It tasted smooth and rich. I was ready for a good cup of coffee on a busy afternoon in Heidelberg.
Alongside my coffee, we ordered a bottle of Proviant organic apple spritzer. I don't mind sour drinks but this wasn't something I could drink a lot of. I will stick to coffee!
Looking over the menu my friend ordered spaghetti with Bolognese sauce. The plate arrived piping hot and generously piled high with pasta, coated in a savoury, meat sauce, and finished with grated cheese and fresh green herbs.
I had a spinach, tomato and feta quiche and a nice bowl of fresh salad. They do a good salad in these parts.
Taking the time to sit outside, sip a good cappuccino, enjoy a cold organic drink, and share a steaming plate of pasta and quiche right in front of such a beautiful historic Heidelberg landmark made for a nice break.
It’s been really fun trying coffee in different countries. While I’m still searching for the ultimate perfect cup on this trip, the coffees here have been a massive upgrade over the instant coffee I’ve been making do with in the motorhome. Kenco finest! I find it's a bit stronger than other instant brands, and while it's hard to go back to instant once you've had proper coffee, it's just so much easier when you're on the road.
After finishing our food and enjoying the warm sunshine, we packed up and headed back toward the motorhome, ready to see where the road would take us next.
