Dispuestos a arriesgar e innovar
Powerful Thinking: Learn About Cognitive Biases and Limitations! -An Analysis of Thought of Power-
In the Thought of Power column of our entrepreneurship community, we’ve discussed that toxic positivity we see so often on social media; and we ask ourselves: To what extent does having a powerful mindset—one that helps us take the initiative and take risks as we strive to achieve our goals—require a conscious, realistic, and strategic mindset?
It sounds good, and it’s essential to be aware of how we think and which thoughts are preventing us from reaching our goals—not only in terms of entrepreneurship but also in our life strategy—because mental blocks are the primary reason we fail to cultivate the empowering mindset that drives us to take risks and fight for what we want.
A Cognitive Bias
The way we reason reflects how the central nervous system works; thus, when we receive information, the brain—in order to process it quickly—draws on existing experiences or knowledge to help us make connections with that new idea.
This often leads to reasoning based on erroneous judgments, because we know that, in human beings, events and experiences do not always occur in the same way or for the same reason.
These are cognitive biases that may creep into our reasoning, and we must filter them through a rational lens—especially when we rely on information based on our experience to make a decision when undertaking or resolving something.
On the other hand, we have many limiting cultural beliefs that are no longer true…
To what extent do we hold deeply ingrained beliefs passed down from our parents, grandparents, or ancestors—beliefs that are not adaptable to the modern world we live in—and treat them as absolute truths, preventing us from acting in a reality that is very different from theirs?
When we have a limiting thought —and we all recognize what they’re like and what they are— we must filter it through reason, through the search for confirmation of the truth.
We generally get caught up in the fears our nervous system makes us feel so that we don’t lose out or suffer—a survival mechanism that leads us to start businesses while risking as little as possible or to make decisions in which we risk little or nothing.
Willing to Take Risks and Innovate
This happens in our lives every day when we make any decision, from buying groceries to taking the risk of starting a business when we’re unhappy with a job…
The point is that these limiting beliefs—these biases—can be effectively countered through self-awareness.
Yes, I know many will say it sounds easy but isn’t—because of the very same cognitive bias that makes us fear losing stability and even money.
But the concept is simple: identify the limiting belief and apply the filter of self-awareness; determine whether it’s a factual reality or a fear or belief rooted in our culture.
How does it work? Well, it’s basic: To transform negative thoughts, you examine the thought, analyze it, and replace it with another one.
It’s exactly the same with limiting beliefs—to generate a empowering thought, you first identify the thought by paying attention to it.
For example:
- At my age, it’s already too late to start a business.
Once we recognize this mindset—which is rooted in a sense of impossibility and even cultural norms—the reality becomes clear:
- In the marketplace, no one asks for a birth certificate; instead, they demand an innovative solution to a specific problem.
How do we replace this fear—or cultural belief—that as we get older, all that’s left to do is sit in a chair knitting or rereading the novels by Fyodor Dostoevsky that we discovered in our teens?
Well, replace it with logical and realistic reasoning.
Furthermore, in this case, the experience a person gains in adulthood is actually a competitive advantage, because they know exactly what others’ needs are and what solutions can be offered to them.
Let’s continue with more strategies for developing a Mindset of Power...
When we ask Dr. Google about the steps to shift our thinking from fear to empowerment, it offers practical steps that we’ve been sharing here for over two years.
We must identify the negative trigger, break down the idea cognitively to separate facts from narratives; in other words, a fact can be proven, while narratives may be based on the fear of loss and failure.
And as a solution, perform a strategic rewrite, which simply means changing the operational instructions you give to your nervous system.
For example, if I’m going to lose, I’ll lose money—and that’s recoverable, since I’ll always have the lessons learned… Which is something we’ve discussed hundreds of times here.
Developing a mindset of empowerment involves, as a strategy, constantly asking: Is this a real fact, or is it a fear rooted in my childhood?
It’s about embracing the premise that skills will always develop, that intelligence multiplies, and therefore, when something doesn’t work, it gives us the tools to generate other ideas that do work.
And also, it’s about helping ourselves understand that we often learn from setbacks, because a bias or unfounded belief is shattered by contrary evidence.
We are a community dedicated to fostering self-empowerment; only in this way can we achieve our life goals, both financial and moral.
That is why it is so important for you to analyze and reflect on your own thoughts, and to share your beliefs with us; so we are reading each other’s posts so that together we can grow on all levels.
