There are Bible verses you read, and then there are verses that read you. Psalm 100:4 is mine.
“Enter his gates with thanksgiving in my heart...”
The first time it hit me, I wasn’t in church with a big choir. I was in my room, tired, broke, and overthinking life in Abuja traffic. But that line? It sounded like an invitation. Not to perform. Not to be perfect. Just to come in. With thanks. Even if my thanks was shaky and my heart was heavy.
That’s why I fell in love with the different hymn versions I’ve heard over the years. One version is slow and reverent, like you’re walking barefoot into a palace. Another is bold and celebratory, with claps and brass, like a street praise party. Some African hymn arrangements add that call-and-response feel — “He has made me glad!” and the whole room answers back.
I grew up hearing hymns from my mum’s old songbook. No Spotify, no YouTube. Just voices, harmonium, and faith. So when I heard Psalm 100:4 set to music in those different styles, it felt familiar and brand new at the same time. Thanksgiving isn’t a mood. It’s a posture. And music gives that posture a sound.
So for Hive Music Festival Week 194, Round 2, I decided to make my own cover.
I didn’t want to just record it. I wanted to live it. The concept is simple: “He has made me glad.” That’s the hook I kept returning to. I pulled from the hymn versions I love — the steady gratitude of the traditional choir sound, mixed with a lighter, modern Afro-gospel feel that makes you want to sway, not sit still.
In my cover, the first verse is soft. Just voice and keys. Because entering His gates starts quiet… in your heart. Then it opens up. Percussion comes in. Backing vocals join. “I will enter His gates with thanksgiving…” becomes a declaration, not a whisper. Because that’s what the Psalm does — it takes you from the outer courts to the inner joy.
Week 194, Round 2 is a big stage for me on Hive. But beyond the competition, this is worship. If one person listens and remembers to say “thank You” before they ask for more, then the song did its job.
Psalm 100:4 reminds me that gratitude is the key. You don’t wait till everything is fixed to enter. You enter with thanksgiving. And when you do, gladness follows.
