Well, folks, it happened. I crossed the threshold. I am now officially at the age where a "wild night" requires at least two days of recovery and a significant investment in ibuprofen.
The big party was on Friday, the day before my actual birthday. And let me tell you, organizing a massive event on the eve of turning 50 is not for the faint of heart. It’s a marathon of manual labor, strategic diplomacy, and liver abuse.
Here is the debrief of how I survived The Golden Jubilee.
🎋 Phase 1: The Thursday Ambush
The festivities actually started on Thursday. I came home to find my front yard looking like a crime scene investigation into my past. My "friends" (I use that term loosely now) decided to construct a massive photo-collage of my face over the last five decades.
There is nothing quite like pulling into your driveway and being confronted by your bad 80s haircuts illuminated by spotlights. Cheers for that, guys. I guess I know who is getting the worst Christmas presents this year.

☀️ Phase 2: The Setup & The Hellfire Heat (Friday 07:00 - 16:30)

Friday morning arrived. While normal almost-50-year-olds are probably enjoying a slow coffee, I began a 9.5-hour shift of unpaid manual labor on exactly zero hours of good sleep.
Before we go further, we need to talk about the temperature. Here in Belgium, we usually get a maximum of 5 days a year where the temperature breaks 30°C. Right now? We have been baking at 30+ degrees for a solid week.
Because of this, I had already not slept properly for four days. Our bedroom is currently hovering between a sweltering 25 and 30 degrees. I am basically sleeping in a terrarium. Meanwhile, my kids have air conditioning in their bedrooms. They sleep like happy little penguins in an arctic sanctuary while my wife and I slowly roast to death.
In this sleep-deprived, melting state, the setup involved:
Doing two runs to the recycling center with yard waste while sweating out my body weight.
Playing amateur electrician to get power to the necessary spots.
Wrestling a massive party tent into existence under a sun that was clearly trying to murder me.
Setting tables and turning multiple fridges into a high-stakes game of Tetris with beer crates.
By 4:30 PM, the battleground was ready. I desperately needed a nap, but instead, I got an email...
🍟 Phase 3: The Great Potato Audacity
The food truck (specializing in Belgian fries/frituur) sent an email the morning of the party.
- Food Truck: "Hi! Can we bake from 17:45 to 20:45 instead of the agreed 18:00 to 21:00?"
I glanced at my watch. My guests weren't even arriving until 18:00. I politely declined.
Look, I love a good fry, but your scheduling crisis is not my birthday emergency. I’m not having my guests arrive to lukewarm potatoes while your truck is driving away. We stood firm. The fries came at the right time. Crisis averted.
🍻 Phase 4: Hydration & The Midnight Betrayal
The party kicked off. The forecast threatened thunderstorms all day, but thankfully, they took one look at my 50th birthday photo collage and decided to pass us safely on the left and right.
Because of the insane heat, soft drink consumption was high. But the real stats are more impressive:
2 crates of Desperados: Gone.
6 crates of Jupiler: Vanished.
Wine & Cava: Uncountable.
3 bottles of Ouzo
2 bottles of Gin
As the host, you have one sacred duty: you must have a drink with every single person. I paced myself and drank responsibly in the early evening. The vibe was incredible, cozy, and absolutely nobody was left standing alone in a corner.
Then... the clock struck midnight.
I officially turned 50! People were cheering. During the celebration, my oldest child casually walked up to me and smoothly slipped the keys out of my pants pocket.
Did I think this was suspicious? Did my survival instincts kick in? No. I was completely naive, glowing with birthday joy, thinking, "Oh, how nice, my kid is holding my keys for me."
Ten seconds later, I was grabbed and hurled—fully clothed—into the swimming pool. Happy birthday to me.
🏗️ Phase 5: The 4 AM Cleanup & The "Kitchen"
The last guests finally staggered out at 4:00 AM. Did we sleep? No. Dripping wet and exhausted, we cleaned until 4:45 AM. Because that’s what responsible, aching adults do.
To add an absolutely absurd layer of stress to this entire event: we are currently in the middle of a "kitchen renovation." I use the word renovation loosely. Let me be perfectly clear: we simply do not have a kitchen right now. It is gone. It is a brick void. (Images included for proof of my suffering). We hosted a massive, fully-catered 50th birthday party while our culinary headquarters was a literal demolition site.

🧹 Phase 6: The Sweaty Aftermath
For the past two days, we have been endlessly cleaning. Dismantling the tent, washing a mountain of dishes (without a kitchen!), and scrubbing everything down. All done in this continuous, absurd heatwave, completely sleep-deprived.
So, to summarize my transition to 50: I worked like a dog, spent a fortune, survived a heatwave, got betrayed by my own flesh and blood, slept in a 30-degree oven, and woke up in a construction zone.
It was the absolute best weekend ever. Here’s to the next 50! 🥂
Cheers,
Peter
