Me encantó esa idea.
No sé cuándo llegó.
Algunos comenzaron a tartamudear.
—Vente, quiero decirte algo —me dijo.
—Don’t take my photograph!
—me gritó.
No salía nadie.
No había nadie.

English
The Photograph
In social media, there’s an endless flood of images of people acting like fools or getting caught in awkward situations.
Nowadays, everyone photographs or records everyone else, often without permission. In some places, if those images are shared without authorization, it can lead to civil and even criminal consequences.
I love taking pictures, especially when I have a new camera or phone—and in the latter case, only if the camera is actually worth it.
My style is nature and events that might make the news. Trying to capture pictures of people is not my thing. I respect everyone's personal space.
But there are exceptions to every rule, and I’m not going to tell you about that one yet.
Once, during a pool party I was invited to, I took my friend Tito along. The guy was fresh out of a divorce, dragging his morale through the mud and looking pathetic. I figured it would be good to bring him so he could blow off steam, eat some grilled steak, and down a few spirits.
He agreed, and of course, I asked the party organizer for permission. Since Maríale knew Tito, she thought just like me and said yes, bring him so he could stop playing the pity card and rejoin polite society.
When we arrived, Maríale told us to get comfortable in our swim trunks. It was mandatory to hit the outdoor shower first and then take a dip.
I loved that idea. The heat was choking me.
After the swim, I poured myself a generous double shot of Black Label that was sitting on a table. Tito opted to whip up a Black Russian.
When I saw Tito was already chuckling, I realized the Russian had already hit him in the head, and the sadness had officially drowned in the pool.
Just when I had everyone mesmerized, telling them about my latest invention, "Come on in, man," she showed up.
We all turned our heads like ventriloquist dummies and our jaws dropped to our waists.
I don't know when she got here. I don't know how she managed to slip into the house without us noticing. What I do know is that she stepped out of the pool wearing that scrap of fabric she called a bikini.
A long, light chestnut mane with highlights, moon-clear eyes, Hawaiian Tropic-tanned skin, and a body that provoked base instincts.
Some started stammering. I simply went mute.
Maríale showed up and brought her over to introduce her.
Her name was María Virginia.
Everyone welcomed her, and the banter started. Laughter went back and forth.
Tito couldn't take his eyes off her, and she seemed to dig the vibe. They started talking and seemed to hit it off really well.
That made me happy for my buddy. Clearly, the pool party therapy was doing him wonders.
Until, all of a sudden, I felt a tug on my arm.
It was Maríale.
"Come here, I want to tell you something," she said.
She led me toward the kitchen, and on the way, I was thinking, “Finally, this girl is going to give me what I’ve been waiting for.”
No such luck.
She just wanted to dish out what I considered pure gossip.
"That chick was brought by Raúl, and you know Raúl is half-nuts and into weird stuff. And as far as I know, she’s bad news too."
That was what she passed along to me.
I told her we were in the 21st century; how could she believe in 15th-century nonsense? It didn't sound like her at all.
The silver lining was that, as our conversation ended, she stole a kiss from me and walked away.
As for me, well... I stood there like a frozen idiot.
When I got back to the pool area, I found Tito taking pictures of María Virginia.
She was yelling at her, furious:
—Don’t take my photograph!
But Tito, with the Russian pounding in his head, acted completely deaf.
Until time stood still.
The unphotographable woman screamed:
—You’ll pay dearly for photographing me!
And she left.
A moment later, Raúl walked out, and the magical event of the day was over.
Everyone headed home.
But I, still under the spell of that kiss, stayed behind playing the fool.
That night was the night of my life.
Wonderful.
At dawn, Maríale woke me up with a breakfast fit for champions.
Just as I was about to take my first bite, the phone rang.
It was Tito.
"Get over here, fast! Help me!" he yelled.
And the line went dead.
That really alarmed me.
Skipping breakfast, I got dressed, fired up my motorcycle, and Maríale hopped on with me.
We arrived at Tito’s apartment.
We rang the doorbell.
Nobody answered.
I went to bang hard on the door, and it swung open.
We checked the whole place.
Not a soul.
We found Tito’s phone.
I checked it.
There was the call he had made to me.
Then I checked the gallery.
And there were the photos from the pool party.
But something else was there, too. Something horrible.
Something that made our skin crawl.
We never heard from Tito again.
And that’s my five minutes for today.
