On Monday morning I was up around 5AM and it was a cold foggy morning. I got my post up and the kitchen cleaned up and some more laundry done.
My #2 intern arrived at 8AM and we decided to do some jobs/chores before going out to sit on the cold ground in the fog. It was only 48F out there according to the front porch liar (thermometer).
I had a collection of things to return to the barn, so we took those up. I had a card to put in the truck glove box. The truck sits unused most of the time and of course, the mice move in, particularly in the glove box.
So I decided to measure it up and see if I could find small sturdy boxes with lids to put the contents of the glove box in. We grabbed the 3 huge shelf brackets out of the workshop and lastly got a bale of shavings for the cat box.
When I went out to dump the cat box, I heard rustling in the Seven Sisters rose at the end of the wood shed. There was a chipmunk on the top of the trellis. I called to my #2 intern to bring the camera, and it just sat there. I got my photos and when I went back out a good while later, it was still there. Not sure what that was all about…
One of the things I needed my #2 intern’s nimble fingers for was fixing the hanging plant holder for the shadowbox. The hanger was made of 2 loops of embroidery floss and when I slid the glass front in, the plant would be touched and hang sideways.
So I needed her to wind some red thread around the tops of the loops to make a closed loop for the plant to hang from. It took some doing but she was able to get it done and now the shadowbox is really finished. I just need to find a place for it.
It had warmed up to 50F by the time we finished that at 9AM so we headed outside. This was what had been left to do on the Little Trees II.
It took us an hour and a half to finish this row of trees.
The last thing we did was pull the mulch away from each plant.
As she was cleaning up while I got pictures and notes, she noticed the remaining pumpkins in the garden. They hadn’t been chewed much yet, so she harvested these 3 to take home.
It was 10:30AM when we moved over to do the Little Trees #12 sugar maple on the other side of the yard. The sun had come out and it was nice out. We got the mulch cleaned out and the last of the Fedco Little Tree mix amendment down and put the mulch back. This tree will need a LOT of mulch next year.
I had hoped to do the Little Trees II grape arbor but with no more amendment, it wasn’t worth the effort. We’ll have to do it in the spring when we make more amendment.
She headed out around 11AM and I went in to sit down for a while. I kept at the laundry and got it all washed and dried but not folded.
I was pretty tired and just rested a while then got up and got the dishwasher unloaded and made some more kefir cheese. I’ve been making it every 2 or 3 days since I started. I have it either for breakfast or lunch most days.
I had been thinking I’d like to watch “The Wizard of Oz” as I hadn’t seen it in decades. When I found this DVD at the free pile on Saturday, I was delighted. It had 2 DVDs with lots of special features. I managed to get through all of it except the outtakes/deleted scenes before heading to bed at 8:30PM.
It was to drop into the upper 30’s during the night so I had gotten the shades pulled earlier to hold in the heat. The wind had been blowing all afternoon so it was necessary to get the shades down as soon as the sun was gone.
On Tuesday I have the young man coming at 8AM to weedwack the poison ivy areas, pull out poison ivy from 2 places and maybe do other work. I’ve made a wish list and we’ll see how far he gets down it.
My helper friend will be here at 10:30AM and he has chores and errands and feeding house plants to do.
I have to clean up the kitchen and finish the laundry and make some phone calls. I have a phone appointment mid afternoon too.
So another long busy day…
