Today I want us to look into this amazing topic that has been on my mind for a while. Growing up, many of us were taught to see our talents as hobbies rather than opportunities, I don’t know if I’m communicating the mind or experiences of all of us but it was the same for me. I was made to believe that my skills and talents wasn’t professional enough to earn a living in the real world or even get a job in the future. All they believed in was becoming a doctor, lawyer , engineer and so on.
[source](https://pin.it/D1aMvJDJm)If you enjoyed drawing while growing up , it was definitely something you did for fun also If you were good at gaming, writing, photography or teaching, most people never imagined those skills could one day become a full time source of income because they looked at it like you were simply having fun and it’s nothing to fully build upon and develop seriously. But thank God that times have changed so quickly and the development has been thrown at our face and today, that mindset is changing rapidly.
We now live in the era of the internet and it has completely transformed the way talent works. Nowadays a musician no longer has to wait for a record label before sharing music with the world, there are so many easy ways to make good money independently from the talent or skill of singing because the advent of social media has made life easier. An artist can sell paintings or digital illustrations to someone living thousands of miles away without stress, the internet brings them closer and makes communication effortless, delivery as well and then a teacher can build an audience by sharing knowledge online! To me Thats the greatest of them all because knowledge is power. A gamer can even stream gameplay and earn from a community that enjoys watching, this one is very common with TikTok and other streaming platforms, they have made so many people popular and earn a living from streaming their daily life fun activities. People like ishowspeed, Mr beast and so many more.
Perhaps one of the biggest changes of this generation is that geography matters less than it used to and it’s a huge flex! Years ago, your opportunities were mostly limited to where you lived but today your audience can come from almost anywhere that’s why a very talented person sitting in a small town can reach millions of people with nothing more than a phone, an internet connection and consistency. Let’s not forget the power of #consistency as well.
I also find it interesting that people are beginning to value authenticity more than perfection. Audiences don’t always follow the biggest companies anymore but they follow individuals they can relate to that’s why people do simple, lame or dumb thngs but still thrive so much online. Nowadays people/audience want to see the process, the struggles, the improvement and the person behind the work nd by so doing your story has become just as valuable as your talent.
Personal branding also comes into the picture, which is very important tho being talented is important as well but people also need to know who you are and what you stand for. Two people may have the same skill but the one who communicates better, builds relationships and stays consistent often creates more opportunities. Yes we know that talent may open the door but visibility and trust help keep it open.
Yes of course, turning passion into business also comes with challenges because once money becomes involved, expectations change. When it gets to this stage thngs change, deadlines replace inspiration, clients replace casual supporters and hobbies suddenly become responsibilities which is why many people struggle to find the balance between creating what they love and creating what pays the bills.
To me I don’t think there is a perfect answer but Meya look at it this way: some people are happy keeping their talents as hobbies, while others dream of making a living from them just like me 😆. Well both choices are valid but what matters is recognizing that we now live in a time where the possibilities are greater than ever before we just need to focus and be more consistent, that’s all.
So far from everything we have pondered about, the biggest lesson is that talent should never be underestimated. A skill that seems ordinary today could become tomorrow’s career if it is developed with patience, consistency and the willingness to keep learning. The internet has opened doors that previous generations never had, and perhaps the next successful business isn’t starting with a huge investment, but with a talent someone has been quietly developing for years.
