English
Talking to ourselves is something we do far more often than we realise. However, we almost always end up having conversations with our past selves, overlooking the need to explore other facets of our own being. This is where the user @palabras1 brings a fascinating topic to the fore: talking to my future self.
Perhaps some might envisage a conversation centred on material achievements, goals attained or nostalgia for what once was. On the other hand, we can break this conversation down in two ways: if it is our present self seeking out our future self, it will be a conversation full of surprises and mysteries to be unravelled; but if the perspective is reversed, it becomes, once again, a journey into our own past.
What would I do or say in that conversation? Firstly, I would observe my future self. Their face, their figure and, above all, their eyes — which would be my own — as if in a sort of dialogue before a magic mirror.
What would I be looking for in that observation? The answer is simple: the voice may lie, but the body does not. By looking at my future self, I would know, without the need for words, whether that tomorrow has been peaceful or whether I have had to walk uphill.
A mere exchange of glances would suffice. I know myself so well that I know when I lie I laugh and narrow my eyes, so it would be impossible to deceive myself. I’d like to discover whether the character I’ve forged remains stoic or whether its intensity has softened.
Nor would I seek to judge my appearance out of vanity: I’d gladly accept the grey hairs, the wrinkles and those little marks of time on my skin. What I’d really want to see is whether I’m still active in my writing and whether I still maintain writing as that routine of calm that I learnt to incorporate when anxiety screamed so loudly it left me deaf.
It would be a silent conversation at first. A hug from one ‘me’ to another ‘me’; something very much like the embrace between a mother and a daughter who merge across time.
Imagining my own talk
Setting: A green garden, with a plum tree in the background. Season: Autumn 🍁 Time: Around four in the afternoon.
I walk towards my future self. I see her sitting there, with a shawl draped over her shoulders, her plaited hair falling over one shoulder, wearing purple trousers, a T-shirt in a slightly deeper shade of purple and comfortable shoes.
My first impression is one of deep admiration: seeing myself there, sitting upright on the chair, gazing at the sky and connecting with nature as I’ve always loved to do. Suddenly, her hands — which are my own future hands — beckon to me with a gesture as she spots me from afar.
I sit down opposite her, observing my own eyes from a different perspective: more mature, wiser, clearer. I’m greeted by a genuine, serene smile—the sort that arises when there are no longer any storms in the soul to torment it. Without needing words, I’m certain that this future version of myself would hold my present hands.
At first, there’s only silence; a moment for us to recognise one another. I, amazed as I contemplate the traces of the years; she, recalling her own past as she looks at me.
My first question would be: —Are you all right?— I pause there, because I don’t know the answer. I imagine a ‘yes’, but I realise that life is a balance of nuances and it could just as easily be a ‘no’. Perhaps not knowing yet is for the best; the answer must continue to simmer gently.
My second question would be: —Are you still writing?— And there, without fear of being wrong, I feel she’d answer ‘yes’. Perhaps with a slight smile, knowing that over the years she’s learnt to write better, to channel her ideas more effectively and to pour her heart into every paragraph of the stories she creates.
Would I ask her anything else? To be honest, no. I’m one of those who believes that the future is built through everyday life. If I want my future self to be fulfilled and happy, it’s my present self who must keep working every day to make that happen.
