English
"Halloween is more than just stories; it’s deep-rooted fears hidden in sweets, in tales passed on by word of mouth, and just as often through films, revealing monsters and ghosts that end up inspiring our own costumes. However, every skin we playfully don in that costume carries a real part of an unknown being that is not present as it ought to be. The fact is that the night of 31 October borders on 1 November, throwing the door wide open to the other side… and perhaps, without realising it, the person wearing the costume ceases to be themselves and becomes the monster inhabiting their skin.”
The Zombie 🧟♀️
Old clothes, the sort you find at the back of a drawer, and for the look, a pair of scissors come in very handy: a snip here, a tear there and, of course, dirt – lots of dirt – to create the illusion of emerging from the grave.
Pale skin – a bit of baby powder mixed with face cream helps; for the hair, a bit of talcum powder and a shake of the head will give the impression we’re after: to scare. On the other hand, add some wounds; use your imagination – or rather, let yourself be guided by the invisible being that has begun to pull the strings. Without realising it, you’ve become the puppet of the being that will wear your skin for a few hours (if you’re lucky enough for it to be just a few hours).
If you’re brave, use contact lenses to make your pupils look white and vacant, and then get into character; walk slowly like the zombies of yesteryear or run fast like the modern ones, and scare everyone – because at that point, you’ve ceased to be yourself.
The witch 🧹
A wide-brimmed hat. If you don’t have one, you can make it using cardboard: create a cone, then measure the diameter of your head and cut out a larger circle, cut out the centre and then fit the cone inside; use masking tape to reinforce it, paint it with black acrylic paint and leave it to dry. For the outfit, wear a long black dress; let your imagination run wild, add a belt and don’t forget your broomstick. Don’t add warts – not all witches have them.
To add the finishing touches, use dark make-up to make your eyes stand out – make them look black, blacker than the night. But be careful: with every detail you add, you’ll awaken the witch within you more strongly, and before you know it, you’ll be reciting spells in tongues you don’t understand.
Walk with a firm stride, with the fury of the years. In your hand, the broom is an absurd symbol in the eyes of the mundane; a real witch doesn’t need it – her mouth is the sharpest knife there is.
The Mummy
A simple fancy-dress costume, as some see it: a few bandages; if you don’t have any, don’t worry – an old white sheet – or not-so-white one – cut into uneven strips will do just fine. Leave your eyes uncovered; don’t cover your nose – if you do, you’ll remember what it feels like not to breathe when they put you in the sarcophagus.
Take a good look at yourself before setting off on your journey; perhaps in the mirror you’ll see your old life, the one that passed millions of years ago, where you may have been a vile sacrifice to quench the thirst of false gods. Don’t be alarmed if you feel a tingling sensation in your body; it’s the ancient sensation of beetles eating away at your skin and, suddenly, the suffocation.
You’re ready; your past life has returned, seeking the bloodline of the one who buried you alive. You’re a living mummy seeking revenge; be careful not to lose your sanity – too many things happen in a single night.
Frankenstein’s Bride
If you have grey hairs, this is the costume for you; you already have the white strands you need. For the hairstyle, arm yourself with patience; use plenty of hairspray, but leave the window open – sometimes scents transport us to other places.
Use your skill to create thin but distinct scars; don’t forget to keep your skin looking dull; you want to convey that you’re not of this world – and perhaps, at that very moment, you aren’t entirely.
For the outfit, look for something period-appropriate: a satin-coloured dress or perhaps one in velvet; sometimes you find real treasures in second-hand shops – or perhaps they find you.
For the neck, use a thin wire running round the back to create a sort of collar; at the sides, using two corks wrapped in silver foil, create the studs that reveal what you are: an experiment that went wrong and is now seeking its own revenge.
The Vampire 🦇
An elegant dress, a refined hairstyle, neck jewellery and high heels; a perfect woman, flawless make-up, alluring eyes.
Skin as soft and white as if you were a mausoleum, contrasting with your red lips, but be careful when you look in the mirror: you might be surprised not to see your reflection. And if at midnight you’re struck by an insatiable thirst, perhaps water won’t quench it and you’ll seek out an appetising neck on which to sink your fangs.
And if you want to let your imagination run wild, you can be whatever you want to be. You just have to be careful and remember your true self, because before you know it, you’ll have done things you won’t remember; because when Halloween 🎃 comes round, you stop being yourself to allow that being inside the costume to use your body, turning you into a mere vessel that feels and sees nothing.
