MicroFiction: A 250 word story format that I often utilize to address the daily prompts. The story today is written using the word prompt "no access".

...I thought to have a bit of dark humor with this prompt that resulted from a recent conversation I had with my spouse on another matter. We had such a laugh from the event that I decided to work our conversation into a micro fiction story. To me, the words "no access" means exactly that...a person isn't allowed to proceed. Or, entry isn't open for whatever reason. I hope you enjoy.

For my theme, I was inspired by and utilized the @daily.prompt's publishing of 19 June 2026, Freewriters Community Daily Writing Prompt Day 3139: no access.

Below is my story:

Finally arriving, Ricky followed all procedures his wife, Gayle, had laid out for a smooth trip to and stay at the hospital. Proud of himself, he made it through the delivery with no hiccups.

Afterward he smiled through the glass at his newborn daughter all peach, precious, and healthy. Anxious to see his wife, he rushed to her room.

He boldly declared, "I can wait to get home and get back to business as usual!"

Gayle bristled, but kept quiet.

This should have been a joyous occasion, she fumed, knowing exactly what he meant. Obviously my husband of two years hadn't listened to my explanations about motherhood; rather relying on his twenty-year old dumb buddies for information.

Their arrival home was eventful; a full house of welcoming family. Still, she seethed at Ricky's expectations.

It wasn't a week later, Gayle dressed for bed. She'd been waiting. As expected, it came. But she was ready.

*"Why are you window shopping on this side of the bed? Can't you see I'm CLOSED for repairs until further notice?"

Ruffling covers, he retreated, exhaling loudly for attention.

The next morning, she vowed to remedy the situation.

But she didn't have the information needed about after-birth expectations, so she ordered it.

She watched Ricky read silently, astonishment lining his face.

"You mean I have to wait six weeks?"

"At least. Check back. If you see an OPEN sign, you're welcome to come in."

They both laughed, when he remarked, "knowledge certainly is power. Thank you."

A continuación mi historia.

Vuelve a mirar.

Gracias».

What a funny and charming story with an ending the left me smiling. Good thing Ricky was willing to learn that love isn't enough on its own. Knowledge and communication matter in this situation.

A fine and well-written piece as always! Do take care and have a relaxing weekend. 🌹
