Hi there! When people hear the word "diet," they often imagine going hungry, eating boring meals, and having to consume bland vegetables—but it doesn't have to be that way. A couple of months ago, I decided to change the way I eat to feel better about myself. I started cutting back on processed carbohydrates and consuming more natural foods—specifically, foods that come straight from the earth.
Although I sometimes lose focus—I am human, after all—I try not to be too hard on myself and allow myself a few treats now and then; that’s normal and perfectly acceptable within my diet plan. After all, I’m not just following a temporary diet; I’m making a change to my daily eating habits and lifestyle. That’s how I like to look at it.
In this post, I’ll share some ideas about my diet and offer tips for anyone else looking to make a similar transformation. The most important thing is to start gradually: swap ultra-processed products for fresh foods like fruits and vegetables; drink plenty of water to stay hydrated; learn to make tasty recipes; and—crucially—listen to what your body needs. It’s also vital to understand that a slip-up or eating junk food occasionally doesn't mean failure. Consistency, balance, and patience are the keys to building healthy habits that you can maintain in the long run.
I got off to a great start on Monday. For dinner, I had two boiled eggs with a touch of oyster sauce on top, boiled plantain, and avocado. Knowing that wouldn't be filling enough on its own, I added a few slices of casabe (cassava flatbread) to round out the carbohydrate portion of the meal.
On Tuesday, I had a slice of whole-wheat bread topped with ground meat—which was delicious, as I’d prepared it with plenty of garlic and onion—and a "fit" green sauce. I made the sauce using plain yogurt, garlic, parsley, finely chopped onion, mustard, and mashed avocado. It was incredibly tasty, and I loved how it paired with the crunch of the bread. Plus, I swapped out mayonnaise for yogurt, which is more natural and lower in calories.
On Wednesday, I made potatoes in the air fryer topped with low-sugar tomato sauce, grated cheese, and ground chicken, and I paired it with the leftover green sauce from the day before.
On Thursday, I had whole-wheat bread again, this time with an egg omelet containing chicken and vegetables left over from lunch. I used the green sauce once more—you’ll be seeing a lot of it this week since I made a big batch. It turned out even better than I expected, so it was perfect for adding flavor to the meal.
Yesterday, Friday, I treated myself to tequeños for dinner—hehe, I know! I made them myself using wheat flour, but that was because I was already preparing them to take to a get-together, so I took the opportunity to fry a few for dinner. However, I fried them in pork fat, which is more natural than regular oil.
In any case, as I mentioned at the start, the idea is to eat smaller portions than before. Even though I didn't exercise this week due to power outages, I’m not being hard on myself or feeling guilty about it. There will always be good weeks and not-so-good weeks, so listen to your body and try to cut down on calories by swapping out ultra-processed foods—like replacing mayonnaise with yogurt or white bread with high-fiber whole-wheat bread. Believe it or not, your body rewards you for those small changes.
