This weekly walking challenge was initiated by @tattoodjay, and it’s always a pleasure to take part and share a little glimpse of where I went today.
This might be an unusual place to take a Wednesday Walk for some of you, but today is the 4th anniversary of my husband´s passing from this world. So I went to visit him today at the “Friedhof Grinzing” located in the 19th District in Döbling, Vienna.
Grinzing Cemetery is relatively small, but it is one of Vienna’s well-known and sought-after burial places. Over the years, it has become the final resting place of numerous notable people from the worlds of politics, entertainment, culture, and business, as well as members of some of Vienna’s established families.
Introduction to Grinzing Cemetery: Source
Nestled in Vienna's leafy Döbling district, Grinzing Cemetery (Grinzinger Friedhof) is a tranquil sanctuary that weaves together the city’s cultural history and natural beauty. Established in 1872 during a period of rapid urban growth, it was envisioned as a park-like burial ground—reflecting 19th-century ideals of remembrance and landscape design. Over the decades, Grinzing Cemetery has evolved into a prestigious resting place for many of Vienna's most celebrated artists, musicians, and intellectuals. With its diverse funerary art spanning Historicism, Jugendstil (Art Nouveau), and Modernism, and panoramic views of the Vienna Woods, the cemetery is both a destination for reflection and a living record of Vienna's artistic and social legacy.
For me, of course, it is much more than a historic or beautiful cemetery. It is a place where I can still feel connected to someone who was such an important part of my life for almost four decades. Walking through the quiet paths today, surrounded by old trees, beautiful graves and the peaceful atmosphere of Grinzing, gave my Wednesday Walk a very different meaning.
Four years have passed, but some memories never really leave us.❤️Sometimes a walk isn't about where you are going, but about who you are remembering along the way.
Just for info: If you are visiting Vienna and would like to visit this, there are guided tours of this cemetery, or you can easily find some on the internet. One example is: https://www.guides-in-vienna.at/cemeteries/grinzing-cemetery/
Thanks for visiting !
