The early bird catches the worm! And other thoughts. / Monomad Challenge [Eng/Esp]

"The early bird catches the worm!" my grandmother would say to me every day when she saw me leaving the house; I think it was a kind of blessing and advice all at once, and so significant was its impact that today, many years later, I still follow it whenever I go out.

¡A quien madruga, Dios le ayuda!, me decía todos los días mi abuela cuando me veía salir de casa; creo que era una especie de bendición y consejo a la vez, y tal fue su trascendencia, que hoy, después de muchos años, lo sigo aplicando cuando salgo a la calle.

Interestingly, despite the photographic advice that the early morning hours are “golden,” experience has taught me that that’s when the best images are found.

Curiosamente, no obstante el consejo fotográfico de que las primeras horas de la mañana son doradas, la experiencia me ha enseñado que es allí donde se encuentran las mejores imágenes. 

Lately, the city streets have been deserted for many reasons; Cuba is in the midst of profound chaos, and that’s reflected in its people.

Últimamente, la calle en la ciudad está desolada por muchas causas; Cuba está en medio de un caos muy profundo y eso se ve reflejado en su gente.

So I walk along, discreetly, so as not to draw attention to myself, to pass by unnoticed, because any little detail could be seen as provocative—and that’s something I don’t want to deal with.

Entonces voy caminando, discreto, para no llamar la atención, pasar invisible, porque cualquier detalle puede resultar provocador y eso es algo que no quiero enfrentar.

A while back, when I saw something I liked, I’d just take the photo and that was it; today it’s different—first I observe, I stop, and then I take the photo discreetly.

Hace un tiempo, cuando veía algo que me gustaba, hacía la foto y listo; hoy es diferente, primero observo, me detengo y con discreción la hago.

However, people ask questions—they want to know why I’m using the camera, who I work for. And for me, since I don’t like giving a lot of explanations, you can imagine how difficult that can get.

No obstante, la gente pregunta, quiere saber por qué usas la cámara, ¿para quién trabajas? Y a mí, que no me gusta dar muchas explicaciones, imagínense lo difícil que puede llegar a ser.

And so the day goes by, with me paying attention to everything, looking for the images I want, not wanting to miss a thing, but at the same time staying very alert to my surroundings, watching for danger around every corner. Is it complicated? Yes, but in the end, it adds an extra dimension to the photographic experience that makes all the risks worthwhile.

Y así va pasando el día, yo prestando atención a todo, buscando las imágenes que quiero, sin querer perderme nada, pero a la vez muy atento a todo lo que me rodea, buscando peligro en cada esquina. ¿Complicado el tema? Sí, pero al final le da un extra a la experiencia fotográfica que vale la pena todos los riesgos.
