Without needing to repeat myself regarding the opinion that movies based on video games face an uphill battle to succeed at the U.S. and global box office, I have always said that, to date, movies like "Mortal Kombat" (1995) and "Resident Evil" (2002)—both directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, have been the most successful; unfortunately, their sequels didn’t live up to their predecessors, especially the film focused on battles fought by a group of warriors from different realms, which led to the inevitable reboot released five years ago. Given the difficult times the entertainment industry was facing at that time, its theatrical release was considered a success—a fact that led to the production of a sequel.

Mortal Kombat II premiered in theaters last May; this is a direct sequel that recounts the events leading up to the inevitable tenth clash between the forces of the Earth Realm, led by “Lord Rayden,” and the forces of the realm known as Outworld, led by “Shao Kahn”; this grand and definitive clash will introduce new characters, leading to new battles in the deadly tournament. I could say that this movie had raised my expectations quite high, but I think the decisions made in the first movie didn’t make me feel the need to see a sequel—and I’m not referring to a certain way the first part was told, but rather to the fact that most of the fight scenes were saved for the third and final act of the film; that’s why I hoped that, once the sequel was officially announced, there would be significant changes—mostly in the direction—that would allow for better fights.

For this film, the decision to keep Simon McQuoid as director didn’t strike me as a positive move, although I did hold out hope that this time around he would take the excellent reviews received for the entire action sequence that opened the first film and replicate that in each of the fight scenes, which for the most part happened, largely thanks to the actors’ willingness to perform better fight choreography, which really made the scenes stand out; I’d also add the need to make some deaths more graphic, which had already been done in the previous film, but this time it felt more satisfying. Although I still believe the director is a victim of both the script and the limited acting skills of some of his lead actors, I think he did a better job this time around than in the previous film.

The screenplay was written by Jeremy Slater, who has experience in both film and TV, although many of his screenplays have been for productions that were not very successful; this time, I think he did a decent job of eliminating some aspects that didn’t work in the first film and highlighting what did create a positive connection among fans of the video game; among the positive changes were reducing the prominence of characters who weren’t well-developed in the previous story, giving prominence to the new main villain, and giving prominence to the new characters who have a better foundation to be the franchise’s new heroes; On the downside, with so many characters to focus on, the film becomes repetitive in terms of how they develop within the story, or they continue to lack relevance to the narrative—which makes them extremely boring and unnecessary. And while I know that Mortal Kombat isn’t a story meant for deep reflection or anything like that, I think it should explore the motivations of its fighters, regardless of which side they’re on; What I’ve described above means the movie is completely split between 40% that I didn’t like and 60% that I thought was fine.

Mortal Kombat II is better than the first film because it managed to fix what went wrong in the previous movie, but it still falls short because it doesn’t quite know how to fix those earlier mistakes; This may sound contradictory coming from me, but that need to undo what was done before significantly affects the film’s development in the first act and the beginning of the second. Once that’s resolved, you can see that the story flows better because it focuses on its two main protagonists: “Kitana,” played by ** Adeline Rudolph** and “Johnny Cage,” played by Karl Urban. The entire story unfolds through these two characters, which is undoubtedly the best part of the whole movie. Their motivations are stronger, as are those of “Liu Kang,” who, in my opinion, is the film’s other MVP, since he’s involved in two of the film’s top four fights. The performance by ** Ludi Lin** is much more convincing, and if there’s a third movie, he should be one of the main protagonists. MK2 is an entertaining movie; it’s not perfect, but it’s better than the previous one. And although a third movie hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, I hope that, if there are any changes, they’ll all be for the betterment of the franchise.
