Putting distance saves us

I have four siblings, with whom I've lived my whole life. Although we don't live in the same house, we always try to be there for each other through thick and thin. Every time we get together, our voices, thoughts, and feelings are expressed loudly, secure in our bonds, in that familial thread that exists between siblings. And although we are very close, we've learned to maintain a certain distance from one another. So much so that in our family home, when we were children, the rooms didn't have doors, only curtains separating one space from another, and even then, we knew how to respect each other's privacy because we understood that sometimes people need to be alone to balance their emotions and reflect on their behavior.

Personally, and currently, although I'm a very sociable person who enjoys going out and spending time with family and friends, I practice distancing myself not only to allow myself to breathe, find balance, and refresh my thoughts, but also as a protective strategy when I feel suffocated by my environment or when people are toxic.

In my life experience, creating distance is normal. Sometimes it's not just for others; I do it for myself as well. If my thoughts are unclear, if I have doubts, if I need to work on something, I can withdraw and listen to my own voice amidst the chaos of voices around me. This has a positive impact on me, but undoubtedly also on others, since under stress, we can sometimes act impulsively, rudely, and without empathy. Likewise, by nature, I'm a very sincere person who not only expresses my feelings but also takes ownership of them. If something seems wrong to me, I express it, and those close to me understand my sincerity and sometimes appreciate it.

I expect that same sincerity from my loved ones. I avoid places where superficiality or hypocrisy reigns. I haven't hesitated to distance myself from friends and even family members who, instead of bringing me peace, only stress me out. However, just as some doors close quietly, I try to create distance without recriminations or conflicts. Distance isn't always about hatred or enmity. Sometimes distance is a matter of survival.

I had an argument with my partner the other day. We were coming back from a party with friends, and he'd had a lot to drink. He confronted me about some things, unfairly. I could have responded right then, but I chose to silently distance myself, because I know that sometimes honesty, if it doesn't contribute positively, can be cruel. The next day, when I reminded him of what had happened, he apologized. I pointed out that if I had given in to the temptation to respond, it would surely have been worse for both of us. In other words, sometimes, like someone who sees a snake and backs away, distancing yourself or staying silent saves lives.

Poner distancia nos salva

Tengo cuatro hermanos, con quienes he vivido toda mi vida.

Él me reclamó, injustamente, algunas cosas.

What is that they say, there is nothing more hurtful than the truth! Too much drink is usually not a good thing, and words can flow out, mind you, sometimes the truth also comes out when people drink too much! Big hugs Nancy

For me to do what you did I’d need some ice ready to cool my blood… but of course, with no electricity here the water in the fridge won’t freeze. Haha… nicely done.

    Cheers @nancybriti1! 😇
