One of Havana’s Most Dangerous Streets for Cyclists

nominated by @friendlymoose · curator vote 9%

It can’t be more dangerous than Stage 20 of the 2026 Tour de France, which has just begun,😁 I know that... And the reasons why it’s called the most dangerous stage? I picked them up from procyclinguk.com.

🚴‍♂️ Stage 20 – The Queen Stage of the 2026 Tour

Date: Saturday, 25 July 2026 Route: Le Bourg-d’Oisans → Alpe d’Huez Distance: 170.9 km Elevation gain: +5,000 m

Main climbs:

Col de la Croix de Fer (2,067 m, 29 km at 5.2%)

Col du Télégraphe (1,566 m, 11.8 km at 7.3%)

Col du Galibier (2,642 m, 17.6 km at 6.9%)

Col de Sarenne (1,999 m, 12.8 km at 7.5%)

Alpe d’Huez (1,850 m, 13.8 km at 8.1%)

⚠️ Why it’s the most dangerous

Extreme altitude: The Galibier is the highest point of the Tour, where lack of oxygen can cause riders to collapse.

Chain of climbs: Hardly any recovery sections; the ascents follow one after another.

Accumulated fatigue: It’s the penultimate stage, after three weeks of racing.

Technical descents: The Col de Sarenne adds narrow, risky downhills before the final climb.

Tactical pressure: The last real chance to change the general classification before Paris.

😅

Before showing you the dangerous street I went through today here in Havana, I must confess… on foot 🤓, I want to share also a curiosity about the race: this year’s team presentation took place right in front of Gaudí’s colossal architectural masterpiece, the Sagrada Família.

As for me, and what I’m here to tell you, you must be wondering why I got off the bike? Well, because last night I was visited by a ‘witch butterfly’, and I was terrified that the superstition would come true, since the butterfly is seen as a symbol of tragedy, bad omen and the like.

This is the street: Avenida Zoológico, which ends in a roundabout. And that sign you see there is one that warns you to give way. In other words, roundabouts always have priority. What’s behind me?

That’s El Bosque pizzeria, but you can’t really catch what I’m trying to show here. Let’s check out another photo, looking towards the roundabout.

Later on, I turned back to take another photo of what I was leaving behind me as I walked (once again), because I simply couldn’t make that effort.

Does it show here that it’s a really dangerous downhill?

IMG_20260704_165520.jpg

The point is that if you throw yourself downhill on the bike, when you reach the roundabout you have to brake — and we know bicycles don’t stop all at once… 😰

So yeah, I wanted to show you I went down and up that mountain walking. It’s great for climb training, but I just can’t — I’m not in shape for that kind of strength workout while I’m recovering. Still, I went out again today because honestly, I can’t stand seeing "my skinny girl" 😆 leaning on the wall and not ride it.

Cycling #ChitChat

Regarding the topic of what I do to improve my cycling skills, in the short I shared you can see some of my practice… I still fear letting go of the handlebars. I can ride while taking out the bottle and drinking water, keeping a perfectly straight line, and at the last stretch of the hill I started practising balance.

I would like to record a video doing all these things, but I need an assistant because I can’t manage alone — let’s see how I sort that out.

Right now I’m resting because of a health issue that probably needs surgery… we’ll see how it goes. I’ve improved a little, but I ought to be more careful and avoid making any effort. Still, living alone has its challenges: there’s no one here to do things for me, so going out, buying food, working, and so on — I have to do it myself. There’s no other option.

😶

I’m more or less like that sign that says: ‘No dumping rubbish outside the bins’. I’m being undisciplined and going out cycling when I should be staying in bed.

Saludos 📸.

You’ll manage it, but ask for help – don’t try to do it on your own!!! Look after yourself!

That is a steep hill there! I remember on my Baja trip trying to photograph some incredible climbs I've mastered (or NOT, and I had to walk my bike up or down on them), and I couldn't quite capture the intensity. According to my app some of them were between 15 and 20%, but apps can be wrong. Though one thing is sure, those inclines were insane!

Nice to see that at least there were no cars or any traffic on that street with the hill and the roundabout.

I'm wishing you a quick recovery, so you can enjoy many more bike rides!

Oh, I'm looking forward to that day! The Alpe d'Huez was my first real long climb. We were on holiday in France in 2019 and I had done some rides with climbs in the region the week before I went to 'the Alpe'. I 'only' did the Alpe D'Huez and not the other climbs, but that only already took me 1,5 hours to conquer the 13,8 kilometers, 1.100-1.145 meter, average gradient 7,9%, max gragient 14%, top; 1.860 meters and 21 hairpins.

It was an amazing ride. And I always watch the tour when they go there. They only climb the same mountain in just 20 minutes 😂
