Café con leche Is in My DNA
I can't think about my childhood or my story without thinking about coffee. It's something that's in the DNA of all Latin Americans, but I think it's especially true for Venezuelans.
My everyday coffee, the one I order whenever I go out for breakfast or want an afternoon coffee, is a café con leche. It tastes like weekend mornings with my parents and afternoons at my grandmother's house, accompanied by a piece of fresh bread or a slice of homemade cake.
Ordering it is almost automatic. It's so deeply rooted in me that I don't even have to think about it.
I don't remember when I learned to drink coffee. It was simply always there. I grew up watching the adults gather around steaming cups, begin their mornings with its aroma, and pause in the afternoon to share another cup. Coffee was never just a drink. It was an excuse to talk, to sit together for a few minutes, to ask how everyone's day had been. Without realizing it, I inherited that ritual and that way of showing love.
For me, ordering any other type of coffee is almost impossible. If a place doesn't serve café con leche, I'd rather order something else.
Now that I no longer live in my country and call Asia home, it's difficult to find a café that knows how to make a real café con leche. The closest thing is usually a latte, but we all know they're not the same.
Saying that café con leche became my usual order would be too impersonal because it's so much more than that. It's part of who I am. It's a habit that's passed down from childhood, as natural as brushing your teeth or drinking water every day.
More than that, it's a ritual woven into my daily life. I prepare it while making breakfast, whether it's arepas or a sandwich. Sometimes, it's simply the coffee and nothing else.
For me, it's essential. It gives me stability, peace, and the quiet confidence that the day ahead will be a good one.
Café con leche is my DNA
No puedo pensar en mi niñez y en mi historia sin pensar en el café. Es algo que está en el ADN de todos los latinos, aunque creo que, especialmente, de los venezolanos.
Mi café de todos los días, el que pido cada vez que salgo a desayunar o cuando quiero un café por la tarde, es un café con leche. Es el sabor de mis mañanas de fin de semana con mis padres y de las tardes en casa de mi abuela, acompañado de un pedazo de pan o una rebanada de torta.
Pedirlo es una orden casi automática. Está tan profundamente arraigado en mí que ni siquiera tengo que pensarlo.
No recuerdo cuándo aprendí a tomar café. Sencillamente, siempre estuvo allí. Crecí viendo a los adultos conversar alrededor de una taza humeante, empezar el día con ese aroma y hacer una pausa en la tarde para compartir otro. El café nunca fue solo una bebida; era una excusa para conversar, para sentarse juntos unos minutos, para preguntar cómo había ido el día. Sin darme cuenta, también heredé ese ritual y esa forma de demostrar cariño.
Para mí, pedir otro tipo de café es casi imposible. Si un lugar no sirve café con leche, prefiero ordenar otra bebida.
Ahora que no vivo en mi país y estoy en Asia, es difícil encontrar una cafetería donde sepan preparar un verdadero café con leche. Lo más cercano suele ser un latte, aunque todos sabemos que no son lo mismo.
Decir que el café con leche se convirtió en mi pedido habitual sería muy impersonal, porque es mucho más que eso. Es parte de quien soy. Es una costumbre que se inculca desde pequeño, tan natural como cepillarse los dientes o beber agua todos los días.
Además, es un ritual que forma parte de mi vida cotidiana. Lo preparo mientras hago el desayuno, ya sean unas arepas o un sándwich. A veces, es simplemente el café y nada más.
Para mí, es indispensable. Me da estabilidad, paz y la tranquilidad de sentir que será un buen día.
