Hello, dear Hive community—it’s a pleasure to be with you once again, even though it’s been quite some time since I’ve been part of this wonderful community that has helped me process my emotions throughout my life. Today I’m here to talk about what’s happening in my country, since on June 24, a terrible earthquake struck, claiming the lives of thousands of Venezuelans. This is my catharsis on today’s topic.

Ever since I was in school, I was always taught how to deal with this terrible situation. I always remember that back then they used to hold drills at school, but nowadays that doesn’t happen anymore, and it should be a priority in all schools—even if it’s just twice a year. Throughout my life, I’ve experienced quite a few tremors and earthquakes, since I’m from the eastern part of the country—specifically the state of Sucre—and we’ve lived through these events. One of them was in 1997, a terrible earthquake that struck much of my hometown, Cumaná; even today, it is remembered with great attention and concern. I experienced this terrible event firsthand alongside my parents and siblings, and I remember it today as clearly as if it were yesterday. But today I speak to you from the heart about what this terrible situation in my country has meant to me.

On the afternoon of June 24, an earthquake was felt in Monagas State, an event that made me reflect a bit on this seismic activity, which didn’t alert me at the time—since I realized that many people received a notification on their phones. At that moment, I was lying in bed, waiting for my son to finish his shower because we were about to go out, but when the tremor struck, I never imagined it would be as significant as what is happening in my country right now. Honestly, I know what an earthquake is, since I’ve experienced one firsthand, but I also know what tremors are, because I’ve lived in fairly seismic areas where you always feel these kinds of tremors—specifically in Sucre state, which is where I’m from. But on June 24, I never imagined it would end the way we’re seeing it unfold now, and it’s time to process my emotions and express my feelings about the situation and how I feel regarding all these people who have lost their lives as a result of this terrible earthquake.

I consider myself a pretty sentimental person who always puts myself in other people’s shoes, and over the past few days, I’ve had many sleepless nights; in fact, I’ve gone to bed quite late just thinking about all those people who are right now trapped under the rubble, perhaps still alive and waiting for a chance to be rescued. It’s something that really weighs on my mind and makes me feel sad, since they are Venezuelans—and we are all human beings who deserve to live. Ever since the earthquake, I’ve felt quite frustrated because I wish I could help as much as possible—to travel to that place and be the one to help those families get out—but we know that this is quite difficult and that professional teams are currently handling the situation. Even so, my thoughts are always with those people—those Venezuelan friends—who have lost their lives as a result of this terrible earthquake. This serves as a great life lesson for us and reminds us that we only have one life, and we must live it to the fullest. Furthermore, we must learn to appreciate every moment it gives us.

To be honest, I can tell you that I’ve cried a lot over the loss of my Venezuelan brothers and sisters—so many children, grandparents, people who had a future and who were perhaps thinking about their future, and those little animals that are also caught up in this natural disaster—each and every one of these people who were in those buildings and who are no longer with their families today. This fills me with deep sorrow for all those families who have lost a loved one. Personally, I have relatives in those areas who suffered minor damage, and I’m grateful for that, but I put myself in the shoes of those families who have lost their loved ones, and I feel absolutely terrible—I can feel their struggle within myself, and just thinking about it makes me feel very sad. I haven’t stopped checking social media and staying in touch with my relatives to see what’s happening, but honestly, I’m going through a constant emotional crisis because of everything that’s happening.

Every day, videos and the people around me help me realize that we only have one life, and that we must cherish it like a precious gem. We must learn to say “I care about you” and “I love you” at the right moment and not put it off; we must learn to embrace one another as a family, to embrace one another as friends, and to always extend a helping hand to anyone who needs it. It’s time to live without resentment or anger in our hearts. Although my immediate family did not suffer any loss of life, I did have quite a few acquaintances who died in this terrible tragedy, and today I carry them in my heart and in my mind, thanking God for having brought such compassionate people into my life. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank every Venezuelan who has done their part to help our friends in La Guaira. It’s time to put my hand on my heart and be the kind of Venezuelans we’re known for. I thank all those who have stood by us during this tragedy and helped our fellow citizens, both from abroad and within the country. I thank every person who has stepped up and offered a prayer for my Venezuela.

Gracias a todos por estar aquí

Thank you all for being here

Honestly, these last few days have been a nightmare for everyone. Although, as I mentioned earlier, it didn’t directly affect my family, I do feel a deep sense of sorrow for those families who lost their loved ones. It’s time to reflect, put our hands on our hearts, and show empathy for those who are no longer with us today. I’m grateful to this community for giving me the chance to vent. By doing so, I can express my sorrow, my pain, and everything that breaks my heart—because these are my Venezuelan friends. I’d also like to thank everyone who, in one way or another, is helping the rescue team: individuals, neighbors, international rescue teams, and all the Venezuelans who have joined in this great effort.

Thanks to all those who read me, those who participate in everything the platform does, those who help the strengthening and growth of the community, total thanks to those who make life in Hive, those who have just arrived and to all of us who have been here for a long time. Thank you all for your receptivity, for your love and understanding.

Your feelings are beautiful and completely normal when you love our country and our people so deeply. This affects—and will continue to affect—us all in the long run. I experienced it intensely here in Caracas, feeling great fear, even though we weren't at the earthquake's epicenter. Soil conditions in the capital and La Guaira made the disaster worse here, yet I’m still surprised by how strongly it was felt in Monagas State and other seemingly remote areas—places that, to nature, are simply part of the same landscape. All I can suggest is prayer, family unity, and—if you’re able—helping those most affected; these things help calm us and make us feel useful amidst adversity. Sending you a hug from afar, Nathy—I’m so glad to know you’re all okay there. 🙏
