It’s by no means a popular anime, but rather a series that caught my attention because of its very unique premise. No es un anime popular ni mucho menos, sino una serie que llegó a llamar mi atención debido a su premisa tan peculiar. Plot
The anime begins by introducing us to Flum Apricot, a young girl who has been chosen—supposedly—by this world’s God and the church to become the newest member of the Hero’s team, which will fight against the Demon King and his minions. However, her special ability does not grant her any powers that would help her in battle, which makes her useless to the team. Because of this (and other hidden motives he has), Jean Inteige, the team’s “sage,” decides to sell Flum into slavery while deceiving her with lies and leaving a mark/scar on her face.

El anime inicia presentándonos a Flum Apricot, una pequeña y joven chica que ha sido elegida -supuestamente- por el Dios de este mundo y la iglesia para convertirse en la nueva miembro del equipo del Héroe que luchará contra el Rey Demonio y sus secuaces. Sin embargo, su habilidad especial no le otorga ningún poder que le ayude en batalla, cosa que la vuelve inútil para el equipo. Debido a esto (y a otros intereses ocultos que tiene), Jean Inteige, el “sabio” del equipo decide vender a Flum como esclava mientras la engaña con mentiras y le deja una marca/cicatriz en su rostro.

Of all the fantasy anime I’ve watched this year, not many have caught my attention as much as this one has—thanks to its interesting premise. While I don’t consider Roll Over and Die one of the best fantasy anime I’ve ever seen, I do admit that it managed to stand out from most of the anime I watched in this genre during the past winter season. It has action, it has drama, and what drew me in the most of all is that it also has plenty of gore to offer.
Getting back to what really caught my attention at the beginning, this anime starts with the typical fantasy story we’ve all seen before: the protagonist is part of the Hero’s team to fight evil. However, this anime is actually a story of betrayal and revenge. The protagonist, Flum Apricot, is betrayed, humiliated, branded, sold, and treated like trash because of how useless she is. Then, the first episode ends with a revelation that you’d normally expect by now, but which still turned out to be great—the true purpose of her ability.
De entre tantos animes de fantasía que he visto este año, no muchos me han llamado tanto la atención por lo interesantes que han sido sus premisas como lo es el caso de este anime, por ejemplo. Si bien Roll Over and Die no lo considero uno de los mejores animes de fantasía que he visto en toda mi vida, sí admito que logró destacarse de entre la mayoría de animes que he visto de este género durante la pasada temporada de invierno. Tiene acción, tiene drama y lo que más me atrajo de todo es que también tiene mucho gore para ofrecer.
Regresando a lo que me llamó mucho la atención al principio, este anime inicia con la típica historia de fantasía de siempre: el protagonista forma parte del equipo del Héroe para luchar contra el mal. Sin embargo, este anime es en realidad una historia de traición y venganza. La protagonista, Flum Apricot, es traicionada, humillada, marcada, vendida y tratada como basura debido a lo inútil que es. Luego, el primer episodio finaliza con una revelación que uno normalmente espera ya, pero que igual llegó a verse genial y es la verdadera utilidad de su habilidad.

Flum Apricot’s “Reverse” ability seems to be very useful against curses, especially when it comes to cursed weapons. For our protagonist, these cursed weapons are tools that offer her many advantages when it comes to fighting and defending herself. That’s how she manages to survive all the ordeal we see her go through at the beginning. I’m not sure if I should categorize her the same way as most protagonists with special powers who always end up winning. But the truth is that throughout this series, we see Flum face various challenges, problems, and hardships as she manages to survive time and again.
So this anime does have something good and interesting going for it: its story, which features plenty of drama and even a touch of horror, as seen in the monsters that appear throughout its dozen episodes. The story has this dark tone where we see an unjust, chaotic, and very treacherous world. Along with this, it also has several plot twists that I really liked, although what I liked least was how it ended up fooling me a couple of times toward the end. As for the enemies, I like how “creative” they are in this anime—it makes me want to know more.
La habilidad “Invertir” que tiene Flum Apricot parece ser muy útil para maldiciones, sobre todo en armas malditas. Para nuestra protagonista estas armas malditas son herramientas que le ofrecen muchos beneficios a la hora de luchar y defenderse. Es así como logra salir con vida de todo el martirio que la vemos vivir al principio. No sé si catalogarla igual a la mayoría de protagonistas con poderes regalados que siempre terminan ganando. Pero la verdad es que durante toda esta serie vemos a Flum pasar por diversos desafíos, problemas y sufrimientos mientras la vemos sobrevivir varias veces.
Así que algo bueno e interesante sí tiene este anime y es su historia, la cual posee muchos elementos de drama e incluso algo de horror como lo es el caso de los monstruos que vemos durante su docena de episodios. Ese tono oscuro que tiene la historia donde vemos un mundo injusto, caótico y muy traicionero. Junto con esto, también tiene varios giros de trama que me gustaron bastante, aunque lo que menos me gustó fue cómo me terminó engañando en un par de ocasiones al final. En lo que respecta a enemigos me gusta lo “creativos” que son en este anime y que me hacen querer saber más.

As for the supporting characters, there are a few who stand out in one way or another. But the one I liked the most of all is Milkit, though I admit this is mostly because of the relationship she develops with Flum, who, apparently, ends up becoming very close to her. Beyond the terrifying monsters, what I disliked the most (in a good way) is just how grotesque the anime gets at certain moments. For example, there’s a scene where the protagonist’s friends are chased by eyes that turn you into something pretty disgusting.
For a fantasy and action anime, it has a lot of dark elements that give it a tone geared toward a specific audience. It’s not that I’d go so far as to recommend this anime outright, to be honest, but if you’re interested in watching something different from the usual fare in the anime industry, then you might want to check it out. And it’s the unpredictability of the plot that I ended up liking, since it’s definitely not at all what it seems at first glance—and that’s a good thing. It’s true that it has its clichés and the typical elements of any other fantasy work, but it’s still entertaining.
También en lo que respecta a personajes secundarios, hay algunos que llegan a destacar de alguna u otra manera. Pero la que más me gustó de todos es Milkit, aunque admito que esto se debe más a la relación que ella desarrolla con Flum quien, por lo visto, termina siendo muy cercanos. Más allá de tener monstruos aterradores, lo que más me desagradó (en un buen sentido) es lo grotesco que llega a ser el anime en ciertos momentos. Como por ejemplo, hay un momento donde los amigos de la protagonista son perseguidos por ojos que te convierten en algo bastante asqueroso.
Para ser un anime de fantasía y acción tiene muchos elementos oscuros que le dan un tono más para cierto público en específico. Tampoco es que llegue a recomendar este anime como tal, la verdad, pero si te interesa ver algo diferente a lo de siempre en esta industria del anime entonces puedes optar por verlo. Y es lo impredecible que es su trama lo que me terminó gustando, ya que definitivamente no es para nada lo que llega a aparentar a simple vista y eso es bueno. Si es cierto que tiene sus clichés y cosas típicas de cualquier otra obra de fantasía, pero aún así es entretenida.

What’s striking about this anime’s plot is that it portrays those who are supposed to be the “good guys” as the bad guys or villains of the story. Starting with the hero’s former teammate, who deceived and betrayed the protagonist, then the members of the clergy or the church we know, and even the goddess herself—whom they so deeply revere and speak of—turns out to be the source of all the evil and horror in this world. In contrast, those who should be the villains—that is, the demons in this case—are actually kinder and more understanding than humans themselves.
This obvious and typical plot where good turns into evil and evil turns into good is by no means new in the fantasy genre, especially not nowadays. But what I like about this anime is how it takes all of this to the extreme, presenting us with insufferable, unbearable, and rather grotesque characters. As for the ending, let’s just say it ended up winning me over largely because of how it wraps everything up in a way that leaves you baffled, yet somewhat satisfied. Although it’s true that I was left with more questions about the origins of certain dangerous characters that exist.
Lo llamativo de la trama que tiene este animes es que nos muestra a los que se supone que son los buenos como los malos o villanos de la historia. Empezando por el ex-compañero del equipo del Héroe que engañó y vendió a la protagonista, luego los miembros del clérigo o la iglesia que conocemos y hasta la misma diosa que tanto veneran y mencionan demuestra ser la fuente de todo el mal y el horror que hay en este mundo. En cambio, los que deberían ser malos, o sea, los demonios en este caso, son en realidad más bondadosos y comprensivos que los mismos humanos.
Esta evidente y típica trama donde el bien se convierte en mal y el mal se convierte en el bien no es para nada nuevo en este género de la fantasía y mucho menos ahora. Pero lo que me gusta de este anime es cómo llevan todo esto al extremo, mostrándonos a personajes insufribles, insoportables y bastante grotescos. En cuanto al final, digamos que me terminó convenciendo en gran parte por cómo concluye todo de una forma que te deja loco, pero un tanto satisfecho. Aunque sí es cierto que me quedé con más dudas sobre el origen de ciertos personajes peligrosos que existen.

Last but not least, let’s talk about this anime’s audiovisual aspects. For a production from a relatively unknown and apparently new studio, I’ll admit it’s not bad. It’s not the best animation in the world, but it maintains a visual quality that’s quite pleasing to the eye. The character designs, the dark and muted color palette, the camera work, and the use of practical visual effects and drawing styles are excellent. I also like the use of light and shadow. The sound effects aren’t bad either, but the soundtrack really stands out.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 in terms of the fantasy, action, and drama genres.
Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual que tiene este anime. Para ser la producción de un estudio no muy conocido y aparentemente nuevo, admito que no está mal. No es la mejor animación del mundo, pero mantiene una calidad audiovisual bastante agradable a la vista. El diseño de los personajes, la paleta de colores oscuros y opacos, los planos y el uso de efectos visuales y estilos de dibujo prácticos son excelentes. También me gusta el uso de luces y sombras. Los efectos de sonido tampoco están mal, pero más llama la atención la banda sonora.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía, acción y drama.
