How could I fail to write something interesting about a day so significant to me—and to all the fans of the most delicious morning beverage in the world? I feel it is my duty to honor coffee by highlighting its importance to anyone with caffeine running through their veins—people who enjoy it in their daily lives, free from guilt, focusing instead on the sheer pleasure of savoring it. Perhaps I acquired this habit in the most innocent way possible: by joining my mom for her morning or afternoon coffee, dipping a sweet roll or Grandma’s favorite cake into the brew. I am certain that is how it all began... Once that habit takes hold, there is no escaping the addiction; one simply cannot live without adding that essential coffee to the shopping list. At least, that is how it is in my home country, Venezuela. I am grateful to Cinnamon Cup Coffee for maintaining this wonderful space for those of us who love coffee.
I recently became curious about how the decision was made to designate October 1st as International Coffee Day. I also wanted to find out which famous figures were known for their coffee habit—and how or where they enjoyed it. Furthermore, I was interested in learning which coffee shops are currently the most famous in the world, and I’ll also share a few tips for brewing a delicious cup of coffee. So, without further ado, let’s get straight to the coffee beans.
To begin with, regarding the origin of the date for International Coffee Day, the International Coffee Organization (ICO) was the body responsible for establishing it. Previously, individual countries celebrated coffee day at their own convenience. To standardize this, the ICO’s Private Sector Consultative Committee proposed establishing a single, unified date; consequently, in March 2014, the proposal was approved by 77 member countries. The first official celebration took place on October 1st at the World Expo in Milan—the capital of Italian espresso. Finally, the UN also officially recognized the day in 2026, through a resolution signed on March 10th.
My second area of interest was discovering the names of famous historical figures who shared a passion for delicious coffee. Among them is Ludwig van Beethoven; just imagine—this renowned musician and composer used to count out exactly 60 coffee beans for a single cup. After all, he was a perfectionist. Another figure was the philosopher Voltaire. I will quote this anecdote verbatim because I know you will love it as much as I do: *** "It was rumored that Voltaire, one of the greatest writers of the Enlightenment, drank between 40 and 50 cups a day of a chocolate and coffee blend. When his doctor warned him that his favorite beverage was a slow-acting poison, Voltaire wittily replied: 'It must be very slow, for I have been drinking it for sixty-five years.' He lived to the age of 83." ***
Last but not least, you are going to like this figure. I suggest you visit the source to enjoy the stories of famous coffee drinkers. It is impossible to mention them all—I would run out of paper doing so—but I couldn't leave out Pope Clement VIII. As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, coffee was once called "the Devil's drink" because it was so popular in the Ottoman Empire, and the Pope's advisors urged him to ban it. The Pope asked to taste it, and after taking just one sip, he replied: "This drink of Satan is so delicious that it would be a shame for the infidels to have the exclusive privilege of enjoying it." Do keep reading the source; the topic is fascinating. I hope you visit it to learn a bit more. At that link, you will discover many secrets about coffee and the various ways to consume it. It is well worth your time. That is history, friends.
Another thing I was curious about was the names of the world's most famous coffeehouses. I know there are several, but I’ll mention just one: Caffé Florian in Venice, Italy (1720). It is the oldest in the world and was visited by none other than Vivaldi, Goethe, Dickens, and others. A live orchestra still plays there, so just imagining it transports me back in time. Then there is Café Central in Vienna, Austria (1860), known as the "café of geniuses." It was frequented by figures like Sigmund Freud; even Hitler and Stalin stopped by for a coffee now and then. It was a café of ideas and revolutions. Finally, to wrap up this segment, I’ll mention the best in the world. They are: Toby’s Estate in Australia, Onyx Coffee Lab in the United States, and Tropicalis Coffee in Bogotá, Colombia—currently the only Latin American coffeehouse in the top 10.
Regarding the photos I’ve included, I’m showing you the process of how I prepared my delicious daily coffee on this day, October 1st. 1.— In the cover image, you can see the moment I display my everyday mug for drinking "the devil's brew." There is also an image of a delicious coffee with milk, which I prepare when I want to have it with a sweet roll. First, I pour the hot, strong black coffee into the blender, add two generous spoonfuls of powdered milk, and blend away. The result is a coffee that is wonderfully frothy, creamy, and super delicious. The next image on the cover shows the first black coffee—or americano—I had here in Argentina. It was devilishly tasty, and I drank it at a café that shares my surname, Hernández. In the subsequent images, you can see the whole process: from brewing the coffee in a cloth filter—or a media (stocking), as we call it in Venezuela—to the moment I finally enjoy it. I put the ground coffee into the filter and simultaneously add just enough boiling water to cover the grounds. I wait a minute or two for the coffee to soak and develop that rich black-coffee flavor, and then I pour out the portion I’m going to drink. I assure you, this is a delightful ritual for me, both in the morning and in the afternoon. It’s a habit my father instilled in me.
The final photo shows the look of pure satisfaction on my face as I enjoy my favorite drink. Mind you, I drink it without sugar—that’s how I learned to enjoy it. I hope you enjoyed this collection of facts about coffee in honor of International Coffee Day. That said, for me, it is a daily ritual, so I celebrate it every single day. Warm regards and best wishes—especially to the community—for keeping us engaged with everything related to this delicious dark nectar. Thank you for reading and visiting my blog.
