1️⃣There's a long-standing belief that genuine female friendships are rare to find or difficult to sustain. Has this influenced the way I approach or interact with other women in my space? What aspects of female friendships have I come to appreciate the most, and how have I navigated the challenges that come with building something intentional with other women?
A lot is said out there about how women can't be real friends, or that keeping a sincere friendship among us is a rare thing. I think that, even if it’s hard to find sometimes, that true friendship really does exist. And I speak from my own story.
To me, friendships have been like a train ride. Along the way, some friends get on and share a stretch with you, and then get off at some station; at the next stop, someone else gets on who might stay longer or accompany you to the end. Or sometimes we are the ones who have to get off. But the beautiful thing is that every single woman who has crossed my path has left something valuable behind: learning, empathy, maturity, and growth.
Of course, not everything has been perfect. I’ve come across women who, out of envy or a strange desire to be like me, treated me poorly and hurt me. I learned from them too, mostly about setting boundaries.
Our teenage years.
Then there are those who arrived like colorful little butterflies: joyful, lively, full of light. When they leave, they leave behind such a sweet memory that just thinking of them brings a smile to my face.
And finally, there are the unconditional ones, the supportive ones, the "do or die" friends. The ones who are right there to laugh, cry, and hug you no matter what. They never truly leave; even if life drifts them away for a while, the memory stays intact, and they almost always find their way back.
2️⃣ Can I share a memorable friendship experience that made me realize I had found someone who would always have my back? What did they do that left such a lasting impression on me, and how has that friendship changed my view about life?
I met Mónica during our last year of high school and we clicked instantly. For years we were inseparable: weekends at the beach, group outings, and spending whole nights talking until dawn, weaving dreams and sharing everything with each other. Later she got married and life drifted us apart a bit, as it usually happens, but we never truly disconnected. A quick call, an email, or a comment on Facebook photos was enough to stay connected.
My birthday, February 2009.
When she got separated, life brought us back together. And it was during a very strange and painful moment in my life that she showed me what she was truly made of.
I had broken up with my partner at the time and was completely broken, lying in bed, crying my eyes out, hugging my pillow, and totally obsessed with my pain. Then I found out I was pregnant. One day I was lying in bed, in unbearable belly pain and not answering anyone's calls. Mónica, noticing I wasn't answering, showed up at my house and kept ringing the doorbell until I had to drag myself across the floor to open the door.
When she saw me, she turned pale. I was bleeding heavily, which I thought was just my period, but she realized I was having a miscarriage. With a gentleness and reverence I will never forget, and with tears in her eyes, she helped me in the bathroom and picked up from the floor what I thought was just a clot. She called her cousin, who was a doctor, to take care of me, and stayed with me for days, taking care of me as if I were a little girl.

Years later, Mónica was once again the one who held me up. My dad lived in the same city as her. My siblings, trying not to worry me, kept telling me he was fine. But Mónica saw him being taken into a clinic in a wheelchair and didn't hesitate: she called me right away and said, "Ali, you have to come. Your dad is not doing well."
I packed my things and rushed out. On my way to the airport I received that call nobody ever wants to take; my dad was gone. But thanks to Mónica I was able to act in time and not be left in the dark.
Since 2016, Mónica has been living in the United States, but distance hasn't changed a single thing between us. We talk almost every day, sharing reels, memes, and messages at any hour. We are still there for each other.

She is fun, funny, feisty, loud, and loves a good argument, but she is, without a doubt, more than a friend. She is that soul sister the Universe blessed me with, and the one who taught me what it truly means to be there for someone.

Centro Cultural BOD.

Agarré mis cosas y me fui volando.
