There are days that put us to the test and we have to take a deep breath and stay calm. Yesterday I went to the dentist; at last, after more than a week of trying to book an emergency appointment, and due to personal matters, the practice hadn’t been able to see me. It was only yesterday that I finally managed to see the dentist, and I was in for a surprise: it turned out that an old filling had come out and I had a huge hole in one of my molars. I thought it would just be a matter of having a new one fitted, but that wasn’t the case: I had decay on the sides of the molar and the dentist had to restore the tooth completely. Thank goodness she’s a professional with state-of-the-art equipment in her surgery, as she takes X-rays herself and checks up on any concerns she has; for example, yesterday she noticed a colour change at the tip of the tooth, took an X-ray and processed it using the artificial intelligence software she employs, and you can actually see right down to the core; with that result, she was able to work with confidence.
But it wasn’t that straightforward: yesterday, for some strange reason, it was bleeding heavily; the cavities were in contact with the gum, which is why the blood was flowing. Although she applied a medication to stop the bleeding, we had to wait a long time, as applying the resin in that state affects the colour and turns it black. When all the work was finished and it was time to check my bite, everything came apart and she had to start again and remove it all once more; a job that was supposed to be quick ended up taking four hours. I went in at 10 o’clock in the morning and left at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, tired of keeping my mouth open for so long, but glad to have sorted out a health problem.
When I left the dentist’s, it was raining, and when it eased off for a moment, I walked quickly into a supermarket; there I had to spend another two hours waiting for the rain to stop; of course, I took the opportunity to buy a few things. It was my first time there and I thought it was very nice and well-organised; I liked the way they’d laid out the fruit and vegetables, and even the meat, and I was struck by some hygiene product bundles for $10 and food bundles for $20. When I see these special offers, rather than being pleased, it makes me feel a bit sad because it just reflects the economic situation we’re experiencing in Venezuela.
When the rain stopped, I left, but I struggled to get home: all the streets were flooded and there was no public transport. I walked a long way to the exit and arrived home exhausted, but satisfied to have ticked a pending task off my list.
