I Blame Omarchy

Many months ago I was distro hopping again, an activity that us Linux users can't seem to get away from. I've said it before, and I meant every word, that Linux Mint is the one for me, but curiosity has always made me jump the fence, if only temporarily.

I had told @eddiespino to join me this time around in the distro hopping activities. Eddie, being someone who is proudly of the nerd tribe, obliged, and we ended up testing a few interesting ones. I think Eddie ended up settling for a gaming distro in the end, but not before we both gave Omarchy a test drive.

An impressive effort without a doubt. Omarchy is, in my estimation, the most modern looking Linux distro I've ever tried, but I soon went back to my old Linux Mint box when I ran into some bugs that were literally deal breakers for me. To be fair, I thought that was it. I thought Omarchy would not become much more, but all of a sudden it seems to have evolved.

Maybe it's the algorithm Gods making sure my biases stay firmly carved in my head, but in the last few days I've gotten bombarded by people praising Omarchy and its creator, DHH. That said, the moment I saw NetworkChuck talking about it, I knew there was a lot more to the story.

I had to watch some videos, of course. I need to do my research, and it might be time to distro hop once again.

Now, this time I will be a tad bit more responsible, since my dev computer is set up nice and pretty, but this new Omarchy craze coincides with a new CPU tower. My good friend @excomunicado has gifted me his old tower, and it sports a trusty old GeForce 1070 too.

This doesn't mean I'm going to be able to run gigantic AI models, or anything frontier for that matter, but it does mean I will be able to experiment.

That said, the distro hopping will have to wait a week or so. I need to download a 6 GB ISO, but I also need to work out the setup at home. Once again, I need to carve out a space inside our little home office, since I won't be on a laptop anymore and need a proper station.

The child that refuses to die in me is so excited to play with these new toys.

But tell me: Did any of you already try Omarchy?

I have to ask: what were the deal-breaker bugs you ran into? Omarchy 4 was apparently mostly coded by AI. 30k new lines of code written by GPT.

I had a similar experience to you but about a half year ago I started to be bombarded with Omarchy content on Twitter. I added it to my list of distros to check out, but haven't gotten around to it yet. But then later, as I became aware of the age-verification at an OS level legislation that many nations are attempting to pass; Omarchy came up once again because their founder outright said they weren't going to comply, and that really made me like him. But he's also a major proponent of AI coding, and I'm very skeptical about that. Hearing lots of differing things about it.

Recently Lunduke did a video titled: Omarchy Foundation got $8 MILLION dollars in funding from Dell, Stripe, Cloudflare, and others. I haven't watched it yet, but it's surprising to me that those companies are donating huge sums to a brand-new foundation created specifically to foster development of Omarchy.

I'm the opposite of a distro-hopper, but I run distros in VM's for recording/testing to make my videos.

First time I've heard of that distro, but it hasn't made me curious about it enough yet to make me try it out. I'll just stick with my MX Linux and Ubuntu Studio for now.

I am currently testing Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC because I need a Windows installation for a prospective side hustle.

Although the software I need for it also seems to run well in Wine, it's always prudent to have a proper Windows installation, in case I run into some problems running the software in Wine.

I dont really cate about a flashy interface. Clean, simple and light is usually what i look for. That said, my go to is Xubuntu though i sometimes use Mint.

I’ve not tried Omarchy @meno but I recently attended MacStock X in Chicago and attended a session that converts vintage Mac 🖥️ OS over to Ubuntu. It was a blast! 💥

I tend to stick with Ubuntu Studio as it does what I need. It would be interesting to try other distros, but I don't find the time. I recently got a new PC and it was a big jump in performance so some things are more viable now, such as video editing. I was checking out some of the audio stuff last night and that is impressive too.

I know @ds-tech tried various distros and does some cool videos. @jza is well into Linux too.

I think open source ought to be a bigger thing on Hive, but I know some of that community have issues with cryptocurrency.

that is one of the reasons i use proxmox , easy to switch distro .
