Stickit: Sticky Notes, but make them Hive Powered

In my mission to both make useful tools and get the name of our dear blockchain out there, I began building something that at first glance might not look too impressive. But that's only if you only look once.

The whole thing started like this:

As an avid user of Linux Mint, sticky notes have been an integral part of my existence. Writing down a silly reminder, a quick little link, a JWT token I printed for running QA on a local backend setup. I mean, anything. Just like their real life counterparts, sticky notes can be used for almost anything you can think of.

Two months ago, I installed Omarchy, and I've been exploring a different Linux world ever since. Some days I miss Mint, but I can't say the experience hasn't been great.

After doing a quick lookup, I discovered that other people had submitted sticky note apps to Omarchy, and theirs looked impressive too. But none of them had thought of my idea: the powerful trick of leveraging a blockchain to provide both rock-solid reliability and device synchronicity.

No need for a backend, because Hive is my backend.

And so, Stickit was born.

I'm releasing it for all platforms too. Currently, it works well on Linux and Mac, but I'm going to get it happening on Windows as well, I promise. Just need to get around to installing a virtual machine or something.

The repo for the project is here:

https://github.com/menobass/stickit

Open source, as always.

Part of the magic is that I've also made a Progressive Web App to go along with it, which you can access and install on your phone here:

https://menobass.github.io/stickit/

The Flow

Installing Stickit on your laptop or tower would be the first step. You'd set up a vault passphrase (make sure you don't use password123, please) to get started. After that, you can add your Hive posting key to the app and set up automatic syncs if you wish.

I would recommend not using your main account for this, since it would effectively be writing gibberish to the blockchain. But of course, the choice is yours. For obvious reasons, rewards are declined for all vault operations.

If you create a new account for your Stickit notes, don't forget to delegate some RCs to it, so that it doesn't run out of jet fuel before it syncs all your notes.

Then, you can head over to the PWA hosted on GitHub, install it on your phone, and now you're as flexible as the ethical preachings of a modern-day politician.

And you're done.

Why?

I'm a firm believer that if you make a tool because you need it, and I do, there's a good chance there's a group of people out there who need it too.

And since it uses Hive, I'm also, in a very soft way, promoting our blockchain along the way. The app includes links to our websites for more information, of course.

Cost?

All this can be yours for the modest price of gratitude.

If you appreciate what I do, what we do in @mantequilla-soft, you can always vote for our posts, our witnesses @aliento and @snapie, and our benefactor witness @threespeak.

Much love,

MenO

This is very cool. A way that I used to do this was through Owncloud/Nextcloud which was hosted on a Raspberry-Pi. They had a dedicated plug-in for this, and an app called QOwn-Notes. But I also have an app called Notes-Up that stores all of your notes as single database file, and so if you keep that database in a Nextcloud, Google Drive, etc it's just that single file being updated. There are risks too of course because if it gets wiped on one computer it will get wiped on others, but you could do a cron-job duplicate of it as well.

Great idea and also goes to show that Hive can be used for potentially many things, not just one or two.

Nice, you open a new market for various Hive tools with that app.

This is cool. There are a few things just using Hive for data storage. I guess we don't want to get too crazy with that, but you probably write more comments than you do notes.

Interesting. I created a new account a few days ago for learning purposes. It will be a pleasure to use this tool there when it's available in the Chrome browser.

  • Getting ready to use it now! Appreciate all your hard work on 3Speak, Snapie, FC-First Context as well as all the other things you create and assist others with seeing to fruition.

In the words of my people: iWepa!

This is something I really needed for a long time! Syncing notes is not new but having them not stored on a system by a big tech corpo or some random guy is gold! Great job ❤️‍🔥

That's pretty cool. I am a hardcore Google Keep fan, though, so it would be difficult for me to switch!

Hey that's interesting I will love to try it
