Today on my Sunday walk I met a family of swan. Two adult swans, all white, elegantly swimming in the water, and behind them a group of dark chicks. At first glance it looked a bit strange as if they were not related at all, but to children and parents. This appearance is normal, I have already searched for information about why they have different colors. Small swans are dark because this color of feathers (or rather down, because I don't think they have feathers yet) camouflages them better. Thanks to this, it is harder for potential predators to spot them, especially when they are sitting in the reeds or swimming by the shore. They will only turn white later, when they grow up a bit.
Spotkałem dzisiaj na niedzielnym spacerze łabędzią rodzinę. Dwa dorosłe łabędzie całe białe, elegancko pływające sobie po wodzie, a za nimi gromadka ciemnych pisklaków. Na pierwszy rzut oka wyglądało to trochę dziwnie jakby w ogóle nie były z nimi spokrewnione, ale do dzieci i rodzice. Taki wygląd jest normalny, już kiedyś szukałem informacji dlaczego mają inne ubarwienie. Małe łabędzie są ciemne bo taki kolor piór (albo raczej puchu bo piór to chyba jeszcze nie mają) lepiej je maskuje. Dzięki temu trudniej je wypatrzyć potencjalnym drapieżnikom zwłaszcza gdy siedzą w trzcinach albo pływają przy brzegu. Białe zrobią się dopiero później kiedy już trochę podrosną.
