Market Friday Give Thanks and Bookstores, Not Necessarily in that Order

What are you thankful for? At this time of year, it is not uncommon to hear those words at all. I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving for those of you who celebrate and may all good things be yours for the taking, not only today but, throughout your life. I know that a feast is being prepared as I write this. Turkey. Pumpkin pie. Cranberry sauce.

I have to wonder if it is about giving thanks any more?

Be thankful. Give thanks. While I have many friends in different places on the divinity circle, I'm honestly not sure who is being thanked anymore. Some thank God, Allah, or even some vaguely familiar entity out there in the universe somewhere. And truly, does it matter? I think not. The very act of feeling thankful makes you feel more positive emotions and is totally contagious!

Be Thankful. Thank you. Happy Thanksgiving

**

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.

#WeInterruptThisMessageToBringYouMarketFriday!!

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!)In keeping with the American Thanksgiving Holiday, I chose to start off giving thanks to my wonderful life, surrounded by amazing people, loving every minute of it and loving you back... an extremely therapeutic experience Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on steemit. I have been pleasured by all of you, as you send in the most wonderful posts. Going places, doing things, buying merchandise. I have been surprised by many, not being familiar with the culture and I must say that it has been such an educational experience for me in so many ways and I hope for you also. This week I am taking you to a used book store in Old Town Manassas in Virginia. I was in the mountains of West Virginia checking out the local scenery and spotted this store on my way home. I had been here before, but I forgot where it was. How lucky?!

Separador_by_mille1234d80r2bh.png

I have been fortunate to have so many of you posting different markets from all over the world! I cannot tell you how fascinating it has been, sitting here, watching the world parade by. So, yes! I would love to see youra! Don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be the grocery store, the local marketplace or even an art gallery. Wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Be different if you wish! It does not have to be a traditional market! We will love it! I promise you! Don't forget to use the hashtag #MarketFriday and @dswigle.

Please leave the link to your post on here so it can easily be found by others. They will all be in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you! ❤

Flowers. There must always be flowers to color my world. This picture is dedicated to the #ColorChallenge by @Kalemandra who colors my world every day.

image.png

Beauty is so fleeting...Every eye can see a beautiful face but very few can make out a beautiful mind.

Some of my loveliest memories surround the blooming of flowers, making me feel like I was touched by an angel -soft whispers, out of the gentle stillness, tenderly caressing my heart. Heavenly.

It is a little different than most of the secondhand bookstores that I have been in. This is it. Step right around the corner and you're in!

image.png

I like the way the buildings reflect in the bookstore windows. Oh, yes! How fortunate for me! Sun and shine and sort of reflections. I am all about the reflections.

image.png

Once upon a time hits you right in the face. There is an old Brownie camera sitting on top of a stack of books, vintage posters, Candlestick telephones. I even saw an old singer sewing machine. I never even asked if they were for decoration or for sale, but, I will bet that they were there to set the stage for the books. I really liked the old license plates.

image.png

I must say that there are some very unusual things in here, but, I certainly feel like I stepped back in time. Very much implying that some aspect is similar to something that would have been common sometime in the past. I breathe in the smell of history.

image.png

Old books are everywhere. I love the feel, the touch, the way they smell. I do love my kindle, but, nothing will replace the binding of a book and the words framed in between those pages.

STOP!! BRAIN TEASER AHEAD!!

source55

Question: Two men find an old gold coin and want to have a coin toss with it to decide who gets to keep it. The only problem is the coin is heavier on one side so it comes up heads more than tails.

*What is a fair way for the men to toss the coin and decide who gets to keep it?*
![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmd53MAusxrNAv1YDQFg96c6n9pFW6d8cM1tfUJ68tE1Ao/image.png)

source

Answer: They toss the coin twice. Each man picks heads or tails on the first coin toss and on the second coin toss they switch. So if you picked heads on the first coin toss you would have tails for the second coin toss. In this way, no one has an advantage over the other.

The entire store is a haven of treasures. Vintage Pepsi crates. I can't remember the last time I saw one and here they use them for bins to put books in. Nice touch!

image.png

A plain white ceiling hardly rates a cursory glance. But cover it with richly patterned metal panels, and instantly it becomes an eye-catching feature. As seen here

image.png

I have always loved books, they take me on an adventure, to another world, doing things I have never done, seeing things I have never seen.

What is your favorite book of all time?

What kind of books do you like to read?

###

Tell me! Tell me! Tell me, do!

And just like that, my shopping is done. Until next time! I hope you had fun today! As always, I want to thank you for taking the time to visit and participating in #MarketFriday! The effort put into gathering and putting a post together is appreciated. Thank you for sharing your part of the world with all of us! Happy Friday! Have a wonderful weekend! Have a most fabulous day!

Thank you for visiting my post 💖 Because of you, I come back to post, again and again, I am encouraged by you, for the time you take to visit, comment or even upvote. For all of these reasons, I am eternally grateful. Don't ever forget what a wonderful world we live in, people. Some days, it is not as easy to see, how wonderful it really is. Kindness counts. Wherever you go, whatever you do.

they set my aunts house on fire i cried the way women on tv do folding at the middle like a five pound note. i called the boy who use to love me tried to ‘okay’ my voice i said hello he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying, and these are what my prayers look like; dear god i come from two countries one is thirsty the other is on fire both need water.

later that night i held an atlas in my lap ran my fingers across the whole world and whispered, "where does it hurt?" it answered,

"everywhere" "everywhere" "everywhere"

What a great post filled with many wonders. I try to express my thankfulness year round and remember my blessings. It’s important and healthy to ponder on our many blessings and thank the ones who are blessing us. In my case I thank the Lord as well as my loved ones who are always taking care of my family and I :)

I love the antique look of the bookstore and all of the historical items they have there. That was pretty nice to have a brain teaser included. Is that one you found in the bookstore?

What an enchanting place to visit, we have 2nd hand dealers throughout our village no one bothers to present the old pieces in such a way as to attract customers.

Books have always been something to enjoy, the smell of the ink on pages, no sorry kindle does not have that at all.

Sitting on the bed reading to the children was always the highlight at the end of a day, watching their minds going down a road imagining the words as they spilled out of your mouth, hanging onto the watch the drawings, Oh books how we miss the tangible feel and touch.

Hey Denise how's it going? That book store almost feels like a museum and rich with history. That poster there Harris Dubois Bataan caught my eye. Bataan is a place here in the Philippines where the infamous Bataan Death march occurred.

  • @jayna(75)· 2463d

Wonderful #MarketFriday post, @dswigle! I love quaint shops like that with so many fun things to see and explore!

What is a fair way for the men to toss the coin and decide who gets to keep it?

    Obviously, a fist fight.

Or they could get a dremel and slice it in half. :)

  • @birdsinparadise(68)· 2463d

There is nothing like the old secondhand bookstores, just drop me off and pick me up another day, lol And the smell, so intoxicating the smell of old books. Stories upon stories to tell. Old clocks, antiques that tell of another time, so rich. What a fun market day you had @dswigle! Love this!

  • @blockurator(65)· 2463d

There is nothing like a good used book store. I'm thankful for the indie book stores we have left.

  • @justclickindiva(78)· 2463d

hi @dswigle. I love books and bookstores too. I thought it only for marketplaces at first. I have a great bookstore I like to visit, so I'll write about that one maybe next week, as I always forget to take pics. Need to get some Xmas gifts, so books again this year. My grandchild love the series books. Her last one was The Babysitter's Club.

  • @singa(71)· 2463d

Happy Thanksgiving to you darling Denise! All your posts are always interesting and exciting. Who doesn't like books?

I love fiction, especially the works of H. G. Wells.
Since childhood I wanted to have a time machine :-)

And this is my new post for #marketriday

  • @papilloncharity(83)· 2463d

One day my girl my dream will come true. I will own a bookshop like that. The only extra that I will have is my genuine black lounge chair, with an old hand carved standing lamp behind the chair.
Also an old record player, "His Master's Voice" brand with a large bronze speaker at the top of it. A shop big enough that we can change one half of it into an old style coffee shop where book lovers can sit and read or discuss books.

We already have many books and even a university donated a complete range of classics to me, but the time ids not right yet to settle down.

You have posted another beauty here. Blessings!

  • @mcsamm(80)· 2463d

Indeed love is all over you @dswigle. I get so excited this day every week simply because l am going to be connected with one of the best friends the steem blockchain has offered me. This is another great post from you like always. The knowledge they say is certainly power. Fill your mind with all these books and make the best out of life. Thanks for bringing this to us @dswigle.

  • @owasco(73)· 2463d

Outstanding bookstore! Someone dusts often! Love the name too "Prospero's Books". Some magic must go on there.
My favorite genre is magical realism. I remember reading this book "The Milagro Beanfield War" that was the first in a trilogy and loving it. I'll have to find that one again. Second to that are King Arthur tales, and Mary Stewart gets the prize there for her trilogy. But my favorite author of all time is Robertson Davies. Tolkien too. Oh I could go on and on about the books I love.

  • @mariannewest(75)· 2463d

I love that picture of you in the middle of love :)

And bookstores are some of my favorites. a huge used bookstore in San Diego just closed. I was there for 50 years or longer. So sad. At the same time, I have to admit that I use my kindle to read and that I have gotten into audiobooks a lot. Partly because my eyes get tired and partly because I can listen to a book and still do other work...

  • @fitinfun(72)· 2463d

    https://steempeak.com/esteem/@fitinfun/entertaining-products-i-m-not-buying-kuala-lumpur-malaysia

What a great store for browsing around, Denise. That looks like a fun way to pass time. My favorite books are all about travelers and explorers. I'm not much for fiction, and always want to know about people wandering around in places they have never been before.

As far as this holiday, I call it the football, fighting, and food fest and avoid it as best I can. I always used the week to go on vacation somewhere since my son's school and my offices usually closed then. My son came home from school when he was about 10 and asked me, "Did you know that most people eat a lot of food on Thanksgiving?"

I am grateful every day of my life for the chance to open my eyes and try again, so I do not really need a special day to give thanks. So maybe every day is thanksgiving for me :)

  • @trincowski(72)· 2463d

That little bookstore looks very rustic and charming. It's been a couple of decades since I last bought second hand books, but someday those are going to be the only books I buy...

Why? Because there has been an Orthographic Agreement in 1990 and it's a big, big mess. After many delays, the books are only being edited according the new rules, who seemed to have been created at random, with no logic or sense.

Since the old books still follow the older but more logical rules, those are the ones I want to read. (It's either that or starting to read in English.)

    Thanks for the photos, Denise!

I can connect with you in this feeling for books! My first book was "Nacho Lee", with which my mother taught me to read, I can never forget that smell and the images that made me travel to other worlds. Since then I have read even in secret at night, after my parents say "is enough, turn off the light and go to sleep", then I managed to keep reading.

One of the literary works that I loved is One Hundred years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Magical realism, is a really incredible book Have a nice day @dswigle

  • @redheadpei(72)· 2464d

Beautiful as always! Awesome photography, and I can see why you're all about the reflections - that's a stunning photo! When I saw the old radio, I thought, "Gee, that's all they had for entertainment at home back then."

But then I pictured being alive during that time, and realized that if I was living then, I'd be thinking of how advanced we were to have radios, and also thinking of how bad people had it before then. Could it be a never-ending cycle?
